"For the truth of things and the benefit thereof are better found by a few folk who are wise and full of reason, rather than by a great multitude of people in which every man shouts out and prattles on about whatever he wants." (Chaucer)

(Chaucer) In a similar vein, Philosophers should be Kings. Being pragmatic, ban all shouting prattlers from Social Media. That would help.

Democracy would be fine were it not for rabid socialists seizing the agenda with their populist 'equality for all' message. This is the 'equality' that inserts individuals into clearly defined groups and balances their interests against one other. In other words, it takes from the less worthy groups in order to enhance the position of those considered more worthy. Doesn't immediately smack of equality, but there you go. And then, fearful that the higher taxes needed to fund the required largesse might lose its populist vote they print increasingly worthless money instead. This devalues existing money and therefore acts as a stealth tax on those who have some money/assets, money or assets on which, of course, tax has already been paid.
So there we go.

Replace worthy with need and needy, tax those who have far more than enough to help those in need. Why, though, should we be subsidising the profits of major companies, they pay workers a pittance, not enough to feed a family, then the state has to top it up via universal credit. Still, the boss then gets to play with spaceships, so that makes it all better, the poor can gaze up in wonder at the product of their graft flying by.

When the socialist Brown introduced 'working tax credits' and 'child tax credits' it didn't seem a particularly good idea. Time has confirmed this. Of course, it's very easy to create new benefits, just the stroke of a pen, they will be widely welcomed by the populists. It's another matter altogether to get rid of them, nigh on impossible. Any talk of even a slight reduction has the populist supported socialists up in arms. And so we have it, spells of socialist government when both businesses and individuals expect the government to provide for their every need with borrowed/ printed money, followed by spells of Tory government, who are unable to reign any of this back.

Missing the point again, it was introduced because it was necessary. Big business realised they could get a subsidy. I think you should have been entitled to claim during lockdown when your income plummeted.

Claim off who exactly? The government has already borrowed 35K on behalf of each man, woman and child.

"It is only when a monarch is reigning that the human race exists for its own sake, and not for the sake of something else. For it is only then that perverted forms of government are made straight, to wit, democracies, oligarchies, and tyrannies, which force the human race into slavery (as is obvious to whosoever runs through them all)..."
