Someone to blame for when the reservoirs crack and everyone drowns. And all for free. Truth is stranger than fiction ... Harthill is currently lowered as it has a problem with the spillway which is of a similar design to Toddbrook. Pebley is also lowered as it feeds directly into Harthill. CRT has told residents that a recent report found the reservoir safe but they are upgrading it at a cost of £5m. I understand that a resident has asked for a copy of the report but CRT have not produced it. When the similar report for Toddbrook was requested, it was refused on the grounds of National Security.

Volunteer required in the Whaley Bridge area. Will be provided with a lifejacket, and plenty of high viz. Easy task, visit Toddbrook every couple of years to see if everything is OK. If there are cracks in the overflow with vegetation growing out of them don't worry about it. We, CRT, acquired our powers from British Waterways. Given this, we'll adopt the culture of any nationalised concern i.e. not give a shit. As long as we make plenty of friends, and pretend how happy everyone is who visits our waterways, we're happy as Larry.

I often wonder how happy Larry actually is in reality.

As long as you can use a mobile phone, then you can inspect a million pound infrastructure.
Genius, idiots.

In the RSPB and other charities volunteering is a route to full time PAID enployment. Is this the way it works with the CRT?

Even the crap they give out about hiring apprentices is bullshit. The apprentices are in fact on UC with work experience. CRT don’t pay them anything and get shot of them after the course has finished.

I'm afraid it's the way of the charity sector these days. There is a charity near me that looks after severely disabled adults in residential care. Several members of staff have been moved on / made redundant and have been replaced by Kids on the government Kickstarter scheme, saving the charity money and letting them crow about how they are employing more young staff. Even to the point that they had a feature on the local BBC TV news.

There's little understanding of how charities work. How to continue offering benefits to the populace especially in these trying times. Don't tar all with the same brush.
Skylight Circus has benefited from these schemes over the years, as have the staff we have been able to take on. Often they move to Youth work or teaching. We are currently looking at the Kick-start scheme, to take on some of our youth members who haven't gone to uni. We pay a living wage, topping up the Kick-start subsidy. We endeavour to keep them on after the scheme, we are usually successful in that. We are not replacing paid staff as C&RT are, nor are they responsible for averting major disasters, you know one dam thing after another.
