@gazza Smarty is good and reasonably cheap since you don't have a contract you can change anytime if it's not suitable. Β£20 a month unlimited but if you use this link to join referme.to/blHJxgxYou and I will get a free month of data. π Ta! All done. That's just the ticket TBH - no contract will be a bonus at the moment.

I understand why there are limits I just don't understand why they are allowed to describe it as "unlimited". . Can't see any limits on my "3" SIM and it's used a lot since it is my only broadband at home and we stream a lot of TV. It was originally called 100gb plus an unlimited add on, now just called unlimited, have seen over 200gb some months with not a murmur from "3" I intend on using the iPad as a hotspot at home too - smart TV's an a shite Alexa will give it a work out

Is it just for use on the tub Gazza? Sorry - missed this one - not for the foreseeable, it will have to act as replacement for fibre broadband for a short while!

Success and failure in equal measure - turns out the iPad Air I purchased didnβt have a sim slotπ€¦πΌββοΈ
Undeterred I had a ferkle round and came up with a reasonably priced reasonable review MIFI thing, dreaded Huawei but there we go.
@loddon recommend smarty sim arrived next day, activated today, stuffed into the MIFI thing and works Bob on, easy to connect to thanks to the QR code under the battery cover.
Job is jobbed etc.

Yesterday my younger daughter, who is 8 and not always under my immediate control, told me "Papa, I looked up 'Fuck Off" on the internet and it means go away in a rude way". Tablet, and the mum was in charge of them as I was at work. The issue I see is that she and her older sister who is ten also know that "cunt" is a bit rude and their mum sometimes uses this word to describe me. In fact I was told today by the older of the two offspring units that their mother had in fact called me a Cunt just yesterday. In French but then french is easily translated. It's okay I know where I stand on this but do wonder about the whole Google bollocks and the children. I did tell them that if they find anything dodgy on the internet they are to tell me about it. And NO SECRETS. They do keep asking about how birds and bees reproduce I just tell them "I don't give a shit fuck off look it up on the internet and tell your mother she is a slut". Isn't it And they know I am overly silly. Which is a Good Thing.

My grandson who is almost 4 came for overnight stay Wednesday....he sat and informed me that the 'F' word was a secret between him and his mum and seemed a bit put out when I told him that was a secret he needed to keep....He then tells me that Mark Drayford has taken all the toys and children aren't allowed any more......I'm now left wondering what do I do about his birthday in a months time..

Anyway interested to know how people get on with "unlimited" data Sims.
The reason I am slightly interested in the unlimited data is I have been considering putting a sim-equipped CCTV system on the boat. Mainly to keep an eye on the mooring lines when not there.
The idea would be streaming of full high resolution images to the phone.
That's where the "unlimited" data would presumably become an interesting point.

Can you exceed 100gb in a month streaming cctv? In any case these things are commonplace now.

I read somewhere 1 hour live viewing is 1gb of data.
So that would be 3 hours per day. More than enough.
Should be fine then..
Time to experiment with my spare smartphone with IPcam app and the 30gb Smarty SIM and a data counter.

Iβve had an unlimited data plan with 3 for twelve years itβs been Β£15 for most of that, I think itβs just recently gone up to Β£17 I should actually renew the contract and get it for Β£15 a month on one of these offers. Itβs generally been good, I think itβs been throttled at times over that 12 years and in some places reception is shit. But Iβd recommend it really.

I used the Smarty Β£10 for 30GB for 18 months, no problems. However I'm in a black spot here. Could get reception upstairs when I moved here but that dwindled a few weeks ago. Got rid of it I now use Giffgaff, Β£20 a month for 80GB which is a bit expensive, but works fine.

That's Vodafone isn't it.
I remember years ago early nineties being impressed by another boater having a Micro Tac flip phone on Vodafone. Proper portable phone you could put in your pocket.
After that it all went mad.

After that it all went mad. Yes. First it was all about making phones as small as possible. I really get that although in my opinion some models went a bit too far with the idea. A few years on it's all about making the phone as big as possible. It's a strange world we live in innit.

GiffGaff is O2 not Vodafone. We were on it but reception is better at home on Smarty so we changed. They are similar in the way they charge Its my standby for internet when I am away
