There seems to be some chatter about this eventually being introduced once electric cars start to take over.
Presumably people who have chosen not to buy new electric cars will be included so effectively anyone driving an older vehicle will be subsidising the new electric ones.
Rishi $unak seems to be into it and as the richest MP I reckon he will get what he wants.
Question is would people want this or is it yet more government interference?
What about taxing the electric power?
It will be pretty obvious when someone is using more than normal electric for their dwelling.
This would also catch cannabis farm operators.
Tax electric. Seems a better option than charging per mile travelled.

Maybe tax electric and then let everyone self declare a percentage on heating/lighting or propulsion would work - there is precedent for this type of arrangement so it might work.

Maybe itβs the fairest way?

I know that electricity is taxed but presumably it would be child's play to just allow a certain level of consumption then tax the extra. Most of this extra in future will be associated with transport ie electric cars and perhaps taxing people with heated swimming pools might be sensible as well.
It seems sensible to tax the energy source as this also encourages efficient use of energy, in theory.
Pay per mole seems too much like wealth redistribution specially while electric cars are considerably more expensive to buy than existing IC engined cars. All that will happen is the people who can afford the new cars will be subsidised by those who can not afford the new cars.

Why should it matter how much money you have?

They do terrible damage to the lawns.

It would be great if public transport was provided as a true public service.
Cars (electric or otherwise) would then be an optional luxury.

Don't personally think it will affect me, I only need to own a car for another five years to get to work and when I don't need to work I'll sell it and just use the moped for shopping trips etc. Petrol may increase sharply in price but at 100mpg it won't make a world of difference.
I'm alright Jack, basically.

Happy as Larry then.
I want to know how happy Larry actually is. It would be useful to have this kind of information readily available.

I guess it means the majority of fol who live in towns with no opportunity to charge the car from their home (living in flats or parking on the street with no reserved space) will have an alternative, assuming there will be plenty of car parks full of electric cars available for hire.
