Boat is out for blacking this May. I need a small amount of red paint for a tunnel band. Hoping to avoid buying enough to redo it about a million times. Any suggestions where I can buy a small tin of something suitable? Cheers, Ian.

Engine/ brake caliper paint normally comes in 250ml tins although as with all paint it gets progressively cheaper the more you buy so you probably won't save much compared to the cost of buying a litre tin of the stuff.

Check local recycling(tip) ours has a paint store and u can help yourself to any that other people have left there

I recently used Rustin's small job paint it seems quite a durable paint. Not a paint expert at all but seemed ok. I did 3 coats in bare metal.
This was about a week ago so no idea about longevity.

I took a lively and very tuneful Jamaican steel band up and down through the rally site on a pair of working boats at the IWA National Rally at Beckett's Park in Northampton in the 1970's, . . but I haven't a clue what a 'tunnel band' is !

Now that would set the place rocking, a steel pan band playing in a tunnel.

It's the rubbing strakes around the counter on a narrow boat. To me these should logically be white for visibility and that is what colour they were on my narrow boats but most of them are not white, people preferring a less visible colour.

I may or may not have used the correct terminology. Then again, after the help you provided to me when I was new to the Trent a couple of years ago, Iām pretty sure you know what I mean š.

I like a red band at water level and white above. Have considered all white, but I like the aesthetics of the colour scheme.

I had the rubbing strakes / aka guard irons painted white with the spaces between them in other colours.
People usually leave the rubbing strakes black around the stern but it does give quite a nice effect painting them white as long as the other bits are not white.
ETA I agree you don't want it to all be white. That would look wrong.
My comment was probably a bit confusing but I was referring to the D section rubbing strakes/guard irons being the only part which was painted in white.

We use Craftmaster enamel paints ... they do small tins for the job.

I've half a tin of yellow hammerite left over from my mooring pins and chains... the lid is rusted away so i've put in in a jam jar - from waitrose no less.
