I said it at the time: A government that organises a 'clap' for just one sector of the public workforce sets itself up for the 'clap' being used later to try to justify higher pay rises for the sector. There was no need to have a national clap, it achieved nothing. This is a fine example of making a rod for your own back.

The clap for NHS wasn't a government initiative, but a social media creation ... Boris and co simply surfed on it's 'feelgood wave'.
I hope the pay offer is substantially increased ... I am reasonably confident the majority would support this.
With election time not too far away, I also believe Boris and team will see an increased offer as a method of 'buying support' so fully expect (after a bit of argy bargy ) Boris will ride in as the hero offering untold wealth ... we shall see.
By the way the missing Brazilian variant carrier HAS been located despite the fox's usual negativity.

Rog Would you like to see substantial increases for all government workers who were considered 'key', or just those who work for the NHS? If the latter, should the significant increases go to all including consultants, senior managers etc?

I’m not sure the general public will be so supportive of a large pay increase for the NHS. It’s such a massive employer that any increase will have a huge effect on the UK budget. I would have liked to have seen a one off bonus given to the NHS staff that have been at the sharp end. Paid for by a one off payment taken from all tax payers and pension payments. A proper thank you from the country. It’s all so easy for us to just say give them a big increase. It’s gotta be paid for though hasn’t it?

I think a one off 'bonus, not taxed' would be a good thing. So much money has already been spent that big pay rises not sustainable but lets face it the front line ITU staff deserve something Not sure those who have hidden in GP surgeries do....

At this stage just NHS front line staff who's pay agreement is currently due to expire (I anticipate around 3% so not exactly huge).
Huge amounts of money have been borrowed for less worthy (in my view) purposes.
I suspect a substantial pay rise for nursing staff would have huge popular support.

Oh crikey ... not huge popular support then. Let's save the money and spend it on HS2, and smart motorways instead Rog

So, just to be clear, I’d give the nurses and doctors that have worked on the nasty stuff a huge bonus. The majority haven’t and I don’t see why they deserve it. How easy it is to decide who gets what I don’t know. I know a doctor, and 2 nurses who have had it easy over the last year. It’s a tricky situation. Think il shut up about it now.

I understand people's reservations about rewarding NHS staff ... I understand it will be difficult to administer etc. But I suspect this government will buy popularity (and votes) by producing a 3% pay rise. For NHS staff I hope so too ... I think they deserve it Rog

I’m not sure it’s correct but apparently they got 12% last year?I think a one off none taxable bonus for frontline staff is a good idea.

The last pay deal which was over three years equated to 12% for some.
Not the same as 12% last year.

I believe the truth is some nurses got a rise of 12% over 3 years (most if not all of these were due to specific circumstances recognised by the pay review board).
