I have known carbon on diesel engine valves soften and fall off during long term storage with no precautions taken. This falls off the open valve(s) and prevents it/them closing. That may give the symptoms the OP describes but to be sure (as said above) the engine needs turning through two complete revolutions but if it is carbon one revolution would do. It would also show by an odd very large valve clearance. Thank you Tony. All of which I covered in my earlier post but faffer chose to "sod it". I did not say that he told me to sod off, but I will as he is obviously not interested in getting accurate advice even though he posted the question. Seems an odd way of accruing advice but there you go. Your a tetchy one. I first liked your post so thanked you, but before i came back one here i was talking to others and so much advice on what to and the engines are coming out anyway i mite aswell for ease for me do your suggestion then. I didnt dis your advice or i would of quoted it and said so. I a not one of your FB cocks who think thye know better or disregard advice. sp please just chill and dont take offenxe so eaaly. well from me as i dont dis folk and if i ever di they would and everybody would know.

JohnV Sorry I meant Saab. My dream car was a MGB GT but I ended up owning Saab products for some years. The death of a dream is hard to deal with. MG, Saab. Chinese owned. And I was like "c'est la vie blah blah blah"

Let us know the outcome, it sounds interesting. Shouldn't be valve to piston interference with petrol engines unless the valve has dropped in or lost its head which is why I suggested taking the rocker cover off as its the easiest thing to remove in situ.
