Now you mention it that does seem to be quite an intereasting solution. I suppose as someone who has always been hemmed in by bridges it has appeared to be a general nuisance. On open water I can see the advantages to be fair.

The devil is in the detail. There are seven boom sliders on my modified boom we will use with my reefable mainsail. Each costs £25.00. This is a complete piss-take, considering they are in essence just a bit of shaped metal. And if I want a reefing spar for the headsail - megabucks.

A friend and I got our hands on a free 49er. Far too much for us to handle. Being beginners and all. Sails and everything? Pretty good going if its more-or-less complete. Try it mainsail only on a calm-ish day and work up. Or buy something less racey to practice with. Or join a club. I expect it will have a hire-boat or two for members. Carbon fibre mast but no sails. Sadly. We were trying to get some but not for us. It would only end in tears. Swapped it for a trailer sailer.

I shudder to think what a full suit of sails for a 49er would cost. What sort of trailer-sailer?

A pretty old fiberglass one needs work and was just rotting away really, his landlord got funny about it so it went. We did start work on it but life got in the way. Personally just want a little dingy so the kids and I can Potter about and learn. Now we have a driveway and live so close to the solent. I'll get on with it. So one day we can get a little weekender.

Secured a spot in the dinghy park much, much closer to the slipway. Very happy about that, the previous pitch was halfway up a slope. Also spoke to a racer (70 years of age!) who may let me crew for him sometimes. He tells me he is ranked 10th in the national class. Blimey.

Price doesn't seem too bad as it's pretty tidy and cared for. You could see if he'll chuck in the O/B. Good luck Phil

I'm not actually thinking about buying, unlike some folks I'm a one-boat-at-a-time sort of chap. More dinghy practice first! I do like the class though, however something with better accommodation would be desirable (enough room for a chart table).

Today I have mostly been making a whisker pole.
Methodology: 1 Take whisker pole ends excitingly made by a well-known manufacturer of boaty bits. 2 Purchase length of stainless tube from that DIY place 3 Mix epoxy resin and bond said whisker pole end to stainless tube using fibreglass matting and resin
Results so far: 1. Big sticky mess 2. Finger bonded to keyboarddddddddddddd

I'm planning on a shakedown launch on Wednesday. The wind prediction looks fantastic at the moment. Hope it stays that way. Also just finished repairing a knackered burgee with some gaffer tape. Now I have a black flag to sail with. Arr.
