So, covid and Ross permitting, we will be joined by daughters dog this Spring. Sheβs a 4 month old cocker spaniel. Should she wear a life jacket? Talking canals at the mo by the way.

Our friends have a couple of spaniels who wear doggy life jackets. Both are pretty skittish & one has actually jumped in off the boat(on the Severnπ³).They reckon all spaniels can be a bit unpredictable.

As long as it has a handle it's okay. With my two animals (light weight whippet cross bitches) I just relied in the collar and yes I did have to haul them out of the water now and then due to occasional misses with the whole dog leaping to towpath or lockside thing.
God's teeth this is making me want to get hold of another whippet cross bitch!
Always liked the idea of a Bedlington whippet, on a string, but I bet they inbreed the hell out of them nowadays.

The first rule of being Yorkshire ... you NEVER talk about being Yorkshire.
We never had life jackets for our dogs ... if the dog not wearing a life jacket is likely to cause you stress or worry then get it one.
Spaniels are water dogs so shouldn't be an issue ... a life jacket won't help anyway if it goes near a spinning prop.

I assume itβll swim around for days just fine.

That said didnt have doggy life jacket for Molly

Patty hit the nail on the head, it's more about getting the little buggers out than keeping them afloat. Of course if like us one of your dogs is blind it makes sense to have a life jacket for them. We used one for Pip, a Yoodle who was blind and put a flashing light on it too, one night I let the dogs off on our mooring and when I called them in only 2 returned, I looked out to see the 3rd dog running up and down the quayheading looking at the river (Bure in Norfolk) I spotted a flashing light in the river heading downstream to Yarmouth. A quick trip in a dinghy was required as the river had ice floating on it. Pip was shaking violently from cold and needed drying off and warming up with Chris's hair dryer. Poor thing was trying to swim but the cold had taken all of her strength, still she survived to carry on as usual thanks to the life jacket. Pip was a no nonsense dog despite her blindness and would follow the other 3 out of the boat by just launching herself off the gunwhales, and if the GSD upset her she would launch herself at him, he would be walking about with this tiny ball of fluff hanging off his jowls. I miss her because of her tenacity and joi de vie. Sorry this post has dragged on but I love and loved all of my dogs Phil

We had Shepherds ... more than once I've had to haul them out of water by their scruff, especially as they got older and less agile.
However we trained towards them not going in any water without permission ... essential when living on a boat.
We have dog-sit my sister's spaniel and operated the same system without issue.
Perhaps the question to be considered is, would you feel better with the dog wearing a harness , especially as it's someone else's dog ?

I suppose if they wear a harness as apposed to an ordinary collar its easier to haul them out if needs be. Spaniels normally good swimmers

Marcus my old GSD weighed 65 kilos needed a crane to get him out! He regularly used to go swimming when it was hot, luckily he would just swim down to the slipway to get himself out, dogs are great things dont know how I would cope without one in my life

I think our lifestyle wouldnβt allow. Daughter though loves visiting the boat so I know the dog will be coming π.
