I’m in the process of fitting new back doors and a sliding hatch. I’ve got thin stainless steel strip to fit to the runners but I was thinking of fitting four small bits of nylon or some material that’s appropriate to the places in the lid that actually run on the sliders. Does anybody know of a suitable material and where I could buy a small amount of it?

That's a good idea. The machine screw heads grinding indicate when it's time to change them. Nice. I've got a very stiff sliding hatch which it is time to sort out on the launch but the problem is there is no room to add things. At the moment it is (rusty) steel running on a nice thick brass strip. Grease helps but it is amazing how often one places ones hands on the runners. I am definitely going to look into mechanical opening either a linak or possible a small electric winch with pulleys. The main thing is to remove the switch gear to a location where it can not be activated with someone in the area of the hatch or one might end up with an ambulance. I think a beam break system interrupting the supply to the linak should work. ETA or a PIR perhaps and operate the hatch via a fob remote so no chance of trapping.

Or just slide the hatch by hand but that's too annoying if it is excessively heavy.

Thanks very much that’s the kind of thing I had in mind.

Also a possibility, would it run as well as nylon? I’m looking for a reasonably quite slide.

Plus you get it on your hands.
Maybe butter as Marlon would say.
The other option of course is to add wheels off the side.
Does the hatch have to lift up and slide or does it just slide along at the same level all the way?

PTFE strip is the best thing to use. Attach it to the hatch and it runs on brass just lovely 😎
