After two years of hitting my head against a brick wall I have found a super electrician, and a great boat fitter. I'n on a good mooring with electrics, modern showers, handy to City centre, all I need. This is my spring break, expect to come out with new flooring, new upholstery, new interior paint job, roof painted if the rain stops, cleaned and polished portholes and mushrooms. I might even have full batteries! Day 1 completed laying of flooring what a relief. Paid on the completion of work by Jill of All Trades.

Yes, well a year on, and the electrician failed to get the radio to work reliably.. Rear speakers are too weak, so I ve bought a radio to use from the phone. The girl who finished the artico floor failed to prep it properly, so not perfect level surface. Her other mods lasted for a few days to a few weeks, desperate to get paid cash and exit, typical. I did the blacking of the hull myself with Jotamastic 90, the boatyard prepped it under supervision, they got that right, or shall I say they did what I asked. They were supposed to prep the roof, including cleaning the mushroom stalks and etch priming, also flat the side I wanted to paint, why they spend thirty minutes discussing a project, then do a different job is very frustrating, seems to be industry standard. Anyway, the roof generally does look a lot better, being one colour instead of patches. I used SML undercoat/topcoat, and it seems pretty good, I had to re prep some of the rust the boatyard did not do properly, and it seems to have worked, though I will re do the chimney collar in the spring. Anyway, my next upgrade is to chrome the brass mushrooms, just the tops, anyone know where I can get this done? I would also like porthole liners, oak, but to prevent staining, I'd like to seal with clear epoxy, has anyone tried this, also recommendations for liners, just the inner edges, not the whole depth. Thanks After two or three attempts to paint the cabin sides, I have come to the conclusion that I should hire a shed for a week, and a painter for a few days, I just think it is too difficult to get it prepped and painted on the towpath without ending up with bits and pieces here and there: at the moment, I need to rub down scratches, and undercoat the gunnels with high build undercoat, finish off some undercoat at the front and the rear, etc etc. I assume all these boats I see with perfect paint jobs live in a marina get a lot of tlc, and a new paint job every eight years.

Clear epoxy will yellow under UV light. You can get one with an additive that will slow it down, though I don't think it will stop it all together. Interested if you do find a suitable one though.

Just buy new chrome tops off the internet?
We sealed our window wood liners with clear varnish, need to do it each year to be effective really but does stop the damp/condensation rotting them.

Yes, but that's why I wanted to seal with epoxy, it's once in a lifetime, do the liners pop out for re varnishing, as I'd need to repaint the insides. I don't know where one buys the fittings for a narrow boat, there are some on Ebay, complete units for £42.00 but I'm not convinced of the quality, I don't see any problem with chroming the existing mushroom tops, replacements may be a different thread, poor quality

Getting anything chromed is prohibitively expensive plus the only standard you can get anyone to do is purely decorative and is not suitable for exterior applications. However, since the chrome will be going onto brass (which has properties which allow the chrome to bond better than it does to steel - I expect Telemachus can give a better explanation) perhaps it would work ok, but probably cheaper and easier to replace them. Or have them powder-coated in 'shiny metal' finish instead - it's hard to tell the difference by looking.

So i have square windows, the internal wooden frames we varnish, but only varnish the bottom piece once a year as this is the piece that comes into contact with moisture the most. Its not a hard task to quickly rub down and apply varnish, couple of hours.

I could buy a spray can for chrome look, and see how it goes, I think I need etch primer to allow paint to bond to brass, not sure how much work is needed, as the existing brass could, in theory, be polished, and look as good. Some of them are not willing to unscrew, and I really don't want to start a job which will prove impossible to finish, the stalks are painted, and are a mess, modern Nitromors being useless.

We have perspex double glazing no condensation to ruin the woodwork. We have just, after 29years, 9 in our ownership with the glazing, treated the base of our window frames with Sadolin Extra, that will do for another few years.

There are specialist "Clear" that are used in art projects, but I have yet to source any in the UK., in small quantities.

As for shrooms, polish and lacquer is long lasting 😁 I'm starting on the brass portholes this week. Brasso and Wet n Dry, 600, not got one perfect yet! I understand the hire boats, which look great, polish them all after every trip, that's not going to work for me, I managed to get rid of the paint, but never got anywhere near a shiny brass mushroom finish.
