The point remains though. Perhaps our Jimbo will be along shortly with a list of chronic conditions that it's OK to joke about, and another that it would be highly distasteful to joke about. I wonder which list diabetes is on, cancer?

Comedy has a duty to be funny ... that's it.
Distastefulness kicks in when humour fails ... if the purpose of a comment is to genuinely make people laugh, I don't see a problem.
The problems begin when the intention is to be hurtful, belittle or to ridicule.

There again, I doubt Jim would make a joke about a woman whose hair is falling out because of cancer. So while Jim is the first to admonish those who step out of line, politically, he seems to think that some chronic health conditions are fair game. I'm interested in the thought process behind this, how he decides which condition goes on which list, and the reasoning behind these decisions.

Yes, I get it ... it is interesting.
Personally I sometimes find I laugh and then feel slightly embarrassed ... but funny is funny.
Other times I think 'that's disgusting' and then think, hang on it's just a joke ... not my taste but just a joke.
I don't like liver ... lots of folks, including Jane, love it ... it doesn't mean liver is bad, just that it doesn't suit my taste.
Comedy has to be the same doesn't it ?

Rog My sense of humour is a dark as they come. I'm not personally offended by anything. I'm just fascinated by the thought processes behind someone who is more than ready to 'call out' people who joke/ mock (it's the same, mocking is funny) about some conditions people are unfortunate enough to suffer from while doing exactly the same thing themselves.

Mocking ... that can be a problem if the purpose is aimed ... for example meeting a stammerer and mocking them ... what's funny ... that's just cruel.
But Ronnie Barker creating a stammering character can be very funny.
Complicated innit.

Jim mocked people with asthma and it was moderately amusing. Some would feel offended, I'm sure. You might have expected Jim to be sensitive to this.

Yes, it's fascinating. If someone falls in front of you and you stand back to laugh rather than help, is that funny ? Yet the pratfall is a staple of comedy. Again, I think the intention is the important part. So ... if I say I'm struggling with my asthma and you return a joke ...that's a bit aimed so perhaps ill intentioned and less funny. But making a funny about asthma itself perhaps can just be funny. Only thoughts... I'm not the humour police Rog

The difficulty comes when someone regularly finds offense with the words, seemingly without considering the context on one hand but on the other, expecting others to understand the context of his own potentially offensive posts.

that will be a jolly wheeze. Offensive. Would you crack a joke about someone with Turrets? Too quick to be picky. Once did a circus project with kids asthma support group, (lead by Sara Rowbotham, whistleblower of Rochdale grooming scandal fame), they chose the name Whizzing Wheezers. I'd suggest the intent behind a comment also stands for a lot. Eg Nigel's dog whistle comments about potential migrants, intent on fomenting dissent and gathering votes.
