Advice sought - I'm a bit stressed...
Basically my boat is too long for me to safely single hand the locks. Have managed 3, first went ok, second I came close to sinking the boat due to the amount of water leaking through the gates and I sort of got the boat wedged between the cill and the bottom gates, third went ok but I was a nervous wreck and realised that I only have about 3 inches to play with even when getting the stern right against the middle bit of the cill.
No winding point ahead.
Frightened of going forward or reversing back through the 3 locks to the nearest winding hole.
Staying here tonight, but suggestions of what to do tomorrow gratefully received.

Can you take any fenders off?
Do CRT assist up those locks?
Can you get someone sensible to assist though locks, maybe ask on the other channel if anyone up that way?

Just looked, they are wide locks? can you go diagonally across the lock?
3 down, 6 to go..

Go in diagonally, empty lock, open one gate, then pull boat back moving stern to centre of cill (the cills are curved) to gain enough room to clear the closed gate. That is what I have been doing but can't do it quickly enough when boat doesn't want to behave and a waterfall is pouring down the back deck - bedroom and bathroom flooded...
Fenders already removed.

Going down the locks. Second lock gates leak badly, third lock gates also but much lower down so water didn't enter boat.

It seems the main problem is the water leaking through the gates? In which case, can you simply "water proof" the boat by closing the doors and adding some plywood or equivalent sheeting to deflect the water? Or even some plastic sheeting taped on?

That sounds like a possible solution - will have a think about it and explore what I can come up with. Thanks.

Back when mem were men and sheep were nervous we used to carry a weighted tarpaulin that we would hold on the uphill side of the gates about 2-3ft away and walk it towards the gates. It would be sucked onto the gates by the leaks and effectively stop them. When lock was full we could usualy just pull it out and open the gates. Doesn't have to be a full with tarp just strips wider than the leaks will do.

I went up there in a 60 foot narrowboat, I had a large steel fender on the rear that I had to tie to the guardrail. I was going Katy corner, yes it was difficult both ways, it gets easier on the Huddersfield narrow

Out of interest how did that sort of solution work when you were going downhill and the leaks were in the top gates - could you still retrieve the tarp or did it just get left to tangle with the paddle mechanism?

Done the HNC, now trying to escape north. I see how long is your boat? Too long....
Supposedly 59' 1" but I'm sure it is closer to 60. Otherwise I just can't see how a 60fter would fit through.

Keep calm and carry on.... just take care of yourself and your boat.
(I did something similar on the L&L a few years ago; take a decent break and a deep breath or three...)
You'll be fine.
