Just before I go any further forward... What are the Calder and Hebble locks like towards Broad Cut? (after that I think I'm ok). I've asked Philomena (on facebook) if she can come up with some help and she's gonna get back to me shortly... some bloke called Mick was mentioned. MEANWHILE - there is another rotten lock on the Calder and Hebble that leaked badly the year before last (it might have been sorted now since the wash out during the floods but I doubt it... it's another one that pisses through the gates and you have to get soaked when trying to get the bottom gates open... not too stressfull when you have crew doing it quickly but on your own it will be a problem. Mill bank lock I think it's called... Shepley bridge is also a pain but there is usually someone around to help with that - I trust you have a hand spike as the ground paddles were all that was working last time.... Many thanks.
And fukkity fuck - how did I forget about the hand spikes. Will need to go for a walk back to Aspley - after calling them.

She's said Mick (I don't know who he is - maybe that is the husband and I've got it totally wrong) will have a walk down in the morning to assist once he's moved a couple of boats around the Marina... if you are phoning them, it might be worth asking who MICk is?
I've pmd you her name so you could perhaps make a friend request on facebook.

I don't know how badly these locks leak but another option on top of the @loddon tarp story is to use bits of wood. Planks and things. Slide down the gate and block the holes. I suppose this might require a reclaimed building site's worth of shuttering ply but if it's things like the mitre leaking badly a long bit of random 2x4 can be quite effective and removeable afterwards. TonyDunkley should be along at some point to explain to the amateurs how it is supposed to be done. Oh god .., let's hope not Rog

Advice sought - I'm a bit stressed...
Basically my boat is too long for me to safely single hand the locks. Have managed 3, first went ok, second I came close to sinking the boat due to the amount of water leaking through the gates and I sort of got the boat wedged between the cill and the bottom gates, third went ok but I was a nervous wreck and realised that I only have about 3 inches to play with even when getting the stern right against the middle bit of the cill.
No winding point ahead.
Frightened of going forward or reversing back through the 3 locks to the nearest winding hole.
Staying here tonight, but suggestions of what to do tomorrow gratefully received.
Try and 'waterproof' the doors on the stern end, and any lift-up boards/covers over the engine if you've got an open decked stern, with anything you've got to hand -- floor mats or bits of carpet to deflect water overside, or towels or pillow cases to close the doors onto trapping the material in the gaps to the sides and bottom of the doors. If that on its own isn't enough, reduce the amount of water coming in at the top end of the locks by dropping the level of the pounds behind you by however much is needed. It won't take long to do -- they're all pretty short pounds from what I can remember of the section with the broad locks. Drop the level behind you with the boat in the lock, hard-up against the bottom gates, the top gates closed, and the paddles up at both ends.

I've sent her your name and number but notice she's gone offline... I have a feeling she does early shifts in Sainsbugs ... I'm sure she'll be in touch. I'll send her another pm with your boat name (if it comes through) THE other chap on here is (I think) called freewind - I could be wrong... he came and introduced himself when I was single handing my way through shortly after my ex left the boat.

I always wanted to be gay.
Was talking to my younger sister about it yesterday she firmly agrees with me in that if she was a bloke she would go for other blokes.
But she is a married woman.
Anyway I've got the reproduction protocol dealt with so maybe it's worth considering it.
