Well both me and the boat are safe, just taking a breather on the C & H, then a short cruise to the safe haven of Mirfield - longer post later.

There's no rain forecast, or more worrying, big storms, so no floods. Once you get to Brighouse you are off the navigation and back on canal. You will be pointing the right way, bow first, to come up through Salterhebble top lock, that one is the smallest, they advise long boats going down to go stern first. After that you are on proper big locks. Including the biggest, Tuel deep. I'd like to come and do a few locks coming up the hill from Tod, can't promise though, busy doing up a house to sell.

So.......
The day started with a gruff northerner shouting hello at the ungodly hour of 7.15am (well it actually started at 4am - but we will leave the insomnia due to stress behind...).
Mick is here! A polite hello and then instructed to untie and get meself down to the next lock as there is a boater coming up - ( now boaters on the HBC actually moving are almost as rare as hens teeth) - what to do - was Mick my saviour or my enemy... but what about trying to waterproof the boat - nowt can be done about that cries Mick, get your act together...
I metaphoriccally toss a coin and come down on the side of Mick is going to be my saviour.
First lock - Mick instructs me what to do, all well but suddenly the boat starts hanging up! At the same time as my cry goes out Mick has realised and is already dropping the paddle - phew, he does know his stuff! Boat rights itself seconds later - all goes well.
Second lock - all goes well other than a small flood event that is only kept being small by quick actions of both of us.
Third lock - boat starts hanging up again, all sorted by quick response, I realise that it is the small step below the waterline that is catching (it is supposed to help you get back onboard if you fall in).
Me and Mick start to share a bit of humour as I think he starts realising just why I was so stressed...
The rest of the locks go fine as we have sorted a system out.
Mick is rewarded by plenty of beer tokens and paid for the C & H lump of wood.
I'm now moored up safely in Mirfield, not really sure how to express my deep thanks for the advice/support etc. I certainly know I owe Mr Q a very large amount of gin.
PS. Whoever said ' Believe me, my young friend, there is nothingβabsolutely nothingβhalf so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats' has never tried to single hand a 60ft boat down the HBC!

And look on the bright side - you will be able to harvest the mushrooms growing under your bed in the Autumn and put them in an omelette!
