Bit of bad news just out from the dept of Transport…… Low spec petrol being upgraded to supergrade, which I presume will result in heavily taxed more expensive fuel for all you paupers running round in old pieces of shite! 🙁 Check if your motor needs driving into the nearest skip here.. www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-e10-petrol***************************************************************************************************************** Standard petrol is changing to E10 This summer the standard petrol grade in the UK will become E10. Currently, UK petrol is E5, meaning it contains up to 5% bioethanol. E10 petrol will see the amount of bioethanol increase to 10%. Petrol cars manufactured after 2011 and most modern motorcycles are E10 compatible. However, around 5% of petrol vehicles made before 2011 will need to continue to use E5 petrol which will remain available as the super grade petrol option at the pumps. Using E10 fuel in an incompatible petrol vehicle will not cause immediate harm but continued use could damage your engine’s parts. If in doubt about the compatibility of your vehicle, you can use the online E10 vehicle checker or seek further advice from the vehicle manufacturer or garage. **************************************************************************************************************** content.govdelivery.com/accounts/UKDVLA/bulletins/2e3e2a1

When I fill the car I invariably fill a 5l can, the mower gets it, the genny gets it, the outboard gets it. Back in those far off distant days of running highly strung two strokes they had a diet of nothing but the former Shell optimax - petrol being cheaper and easier to replace than pistons and heads!

@gazza I remember the days of having to use 5* in my 1293 Cooper S would pink on anything less. It was fine until I wrecked it travelling to fast, hump backed bridge, right hand bend, brickwall, weeks in hospital.

One still uses 4 star in one's V12 you know.
The accountant sometimes asks about it as he has an E type but those jew boys flash boxes will take anything you give them to be honest.
Very infra dig this jaguar thing. Lagonda much better.
For the day to day blend in with the plebs one chooses a more modern Japanese compact car. The next car will be made of elastic trickery but one will always prefer the twelve.
And the 4 star. Poisoning roadside blackberries is good sport.

Not fuel related but GOV rip off related it is. Or juts a moan I dont agree with or get why the hell some cars are road funded at say £100 and others at four five times more.
My Shogun is £365 and i do very little miles towards what other cheaper cars pay for tax or road fund what ever they want to call it. Yes it from emissions but if my car does half the miles a year a car that give less than half the emissions then why yh eheck do i pay 3 times as much for road tax.
A bloody rip off Britain scheme as usual init.

More expense, oh well, fun ain't cheap. Don’t forget your lawn mowers etc.. it’s the rubber hoses and carb parts it kills. Soldier etc. I’m beginning to hate the 21st century.

Totally erroneous (albeit common) understanding of petrol here Gazza. Optimax and other "premium" fuels are not "better quality", they are simply higher octane, which is required for engines with a high compression ratio, i.e. 10:1 or above. Your mower, generator and outboard motor will have compression ratios of around 7:1 and will run better on lower octane fuel, higher octane fuel being less combustible in order to prevent "dieselling" on high compression engines.
