Hello, so my license says started 08/2020 expires 07/2021 - so this means I have until the end of July doesn't it? I will need a new one 1st August.

I wonder if auto renew will still work when the new t&c come in.
I seem to recall that you are required to provide proof of insurance rather than just a reference number.

Maybe a reminder to provide it some time before the end of your licence, if not presented then i guess it would cancel it.
Who knows with CRT.

Yes I have received a reminder for insurance details for the license already, clear as mud if it's just the ref number I need or to provide the cert as well. This is it; According to our records your current Insurance Certification expires on 08/07/2021. If you have already renewed your insurance policy with regard to your boat/s, or as soon as you have your new policy/expiry number in place, please logon to your online account at licensing.canalrivertrust.org.uk and update the details yourself under ‘My Boats’ or alternatively contact our customer service team with the new details on 0303 040 4040. Holding valid insurance is a boat licence requirement. If you are unable to supply a valid examination report with a licence application, you risk forfeiting the prompt payment discount.

Looks like they are maybe saying if you are asked for the cert this will hold up processing and thus you will miss out on the prompt payment discount? So idealy wanting folk to allow for plenty of time.

when my insurance renews, it remains the same policy number so I presume I will just need to update the end date in 'my boats'... I'll not lose sleep over it

I can't find the "updated t&c" but I sen to remember that the insurance needs to cover the entire period of the license.
This makes sense, obviously but can cause issues if you have been "doing other things" and end up with insurance which is not renewable on exactly the same day as the license is renewable.
The result would most likely be a period of not being insured while being licensed or the other way around. Vice versa or verce visa.
Anyway it's probably ok but the CRT are overstretching when they say that they require daily updates of vessel progress via tik tok and I was like "yeah yeah yeah" isn't it?

You need to get some written - e-mail - clarification on exactly what it is these clowns in C&RT's Arse & Elbow Department do want. The last two sentences above start off with 'insurance' as the subject in hand, and then in the second sentence the subject changes to a 'valid examination report', . . which can only be a reference to a BSS "examination", . . and the BS certificate issued post the 'examination'. There's no need for you to forward BSSC details to C&RT, . . because they already have the details of your current certificate, including the expiry date, from the BSS database.

The bit you highlighted is still true though, to be fair.
If you don't provide proof of BS then they nick your boat off you. In a very real way.
Isn't it.
I know it says it's just the prompt payment discount but in reality it's a lot more serious than that.
The idea here is to toe the line or get a really good lawyer.

I hadn't noticed that, well spotted Tony; I thought it was only talking about insurance renewal, but yes, this does read as though referring to BSS; I assume I can't renew my license if they don't have the correct docs; but then I am also assuming they have these from last year, there is no change here, BSS due 2022; and given they let me pay all year last year there shouldn't be a problem, should there? Once ins. is provided.

Should be fine to renew the license. I have been blocked from buying licenses for boats on CRT water without moorings. This includes "Gold Licenses" I needed to buy a "gold license" online for one of the boats due to being too law abiding so when I found the route blocked I just selected the "boat out of water when not in use" bit and I was able to pay for the license. The boat is in use all the time so I presume this was ok or am I doing a TonyDunkley and seeking loopholes?

Just renewed my licence, on auto renew, the only emails were a reminder then one to confirm they would be taking the money. Nothing about T&C's etc, or my "agreement" with them.
