Helping people use the locks is probably better than just breaking them.

Went up Knowle locks this morning. NO VOLOCKIES (I think they must have known we were coming!) so it was blissful!
I did however notice that the top paddles on the top lock only go 13 turns, whereas all the other paddles do 25 turns. Which is a bit annoying as it slows the whole flight at busy times (are there any busy times at Knowle?) but more importantly, when the paddle gets to the end of its travel there is a hard stop that you can’t see. If you are in full swing and the windlass stops dead, it jars you whole arm. Which is why I always count the turns and slow down as the end approaches. So I now have a jarred arm!
Thinking about why the top lock top paddles have been emasculated, it is obvious. There are permanently moored boats at the top, one even on what was originally a lock landing. So I suspect the usual thing - buy a mooring on a lock landing and then complain when your boat moves when the lock is used. Just like buy a house in a village and then complain about the church bells and smell of cowshit, buy a house next to an airfield and then complain about aircraft noise. With boaters who actually move their boats being bottom of CRT’s priory list (fisherman, walkers, cyclists, volunteers, residents all being higher) I suppose it’s not surprising.

Telemachus/Nick....can we have a progress report please on the invalid? I can’t remember what was last reported, but anyway the original date for the great unlocking was last Thursday, however the doctor thought another week would be advisable, so we are currently on the B&F returning to the marina for tomorrow, driving back up to Aberdeen Wednesday and he has an appointment for Thursday morning. I think they want to x-ray it to see how much calcification /healing has occurred before making a final decision, so Thursday isn’t guaranteed to be unlocking day but hopefully… He seems to be in less discomfort that he has been, but still finds the inability to speak to strangers on the cut, to answer the phone and to eat anything other than pure liquid, to be pretty frustrating. But thanks for asking!

I am right handed so that does most of the work winding paddles, but he hit me on my left shoulder.

I wonder how the paddle has been locked. If I remember right Knowle has the Ham Baker candlesticks which are a screw driven sluice rather than rack and pinion.
So if it is not going to its full travel what will have been done to stop it? Maybe they are adjustable I don't know or is it just a jubilee clip job perhaps.
It must be frustrating as I recall those locks while not being quite as quaint and old as some are very efficient and fast to move water which is always quite satisfying. When it works properly.

Something internal because there is nothing to show for it. Yes the same Ham Baker paddles as on Hatton etc which as you say are a screw thread type thing. Presumably something put on the riser that hits a stop half way up. Seems very solid so I suspect something more substantial than a jubilee clip, but you never know…

For info, I received a perfectly satisfactory reply to my email to Adnan Saif, the W Midlands regional director. There was no hint about anything to do with having to obey the volunteer’s instructions.
