Is it a hardwood one? I'd be interested. Could maybe come and meet up as you are traversing the L&L, Skipton, or Burnley/Blackburn.

Will send a PM once out of Leeds and get a better idea of the L&L (I know it can be hard work). I'm on a fairly tight schedule (although nothing like Mr Q's) as still want to make my booking for the Ribble Link, so things might not work out. Yours for free unless I hand it over to another boater in need beforehand.

I would hang on to it, . . if I were you. You might end up one day with no other choice of route back across the Pennines, . . and, in any case, it's a useful thing to have if you need to persuade any of C&RT's volunteers round to your point of view.

I've got to admit I'd hang on to it too... it can double as a winder for the spanish windlass OR self defense if being marauded by thugs in Burnley.
Where are you now Mr Armchair?

Leeds dock or whatever it is properly called. Very quite and peaceful - but blowing a gale atm thanks for the recomendation. Spending the day trying to sort electrickery problems (and stocking up with beer!) - worst case is that I think I've done enough to convert the boat to fully 12v operation if needed (with only the washing machine off the list of what is needed for a happy non-camping lifestyle...).

Excellent - you are lucky to have found a space in there. The wind is WORSE when you get into Granary though.... it actually blew a full watering can off the roof due to the down drafts caused by the tall buildings. Mind you, if you are having as much rain up there as we are down here, they'll be closing the flood gates and locking you in until the Aire calms down a bit... which is handy if you can use the electric.
I trust Lemonroyd on your own was ok? - I suppose at this time of year, chances are ther'd be other boats in it with you or maybe even a lockie pressing the buttons.

The first time I was in Northern waters (apart from back in the 60's on the MSC) was on Shapfell 25'6" narrow beam yoghurt pot. Somewhere I have a photograph of her at one end of a vast lock (I think it was Sykehouse on the New Junction) and she looked like a toy boat in a bathtub
I remember that couple of years spent in Northern waters as an amazing experience, I was lucky enough to be able to see many of the gravellers still wotking and a lot of the infrastructure that is now history.
Apart from the long climb up and down the ladders, I never found the big automated locks a challenge (of course I didn't have sore ribs at the time )

Lemonroyd wasn't too scary, would have been nice if one of the nearby boaters had helped rather than just moored on the lock landing loading furniture saying they will be out my way soon... I walked away before I lost my rag.. Actually I should have asked for help as they turned out to be quite pleasant...
Was going to set off from Leeds today but decided I need to plan ahead and sort something to stop any leaking top gates from flooding the well deck. Also want to check I'll fit the locks with fenders down.

I still have my handspike, purchased as an afterthought as we were doing the crossing for £14 in a marina ... this was is 2006 ! Never actually used it ... but did one of the locks with a guy who'd salvaged a piece of driftwood and shaped the end to fit. Ever felt 'had' Rog

you could get away without using the handspike for a couple of years until the gate paddles packed in on the figure and you HAD to use them... then again since they washed away the year before last, I should assume they mended the gate paddles?

I think you mean the ground paddles, windlass drawn, gates are a spike. IMMSMR the top gate on Salterhebble is all spike?
