I guess the sensitive content of the emails means you want them off the server in case you get black-forested. They can get at your computer as well though. They probably can, but hard-drive failure is probably more of a risk. It's more diffic for they if you also save sensitive files to a flash drive (but a cd is more likely to survive the EMP - secure data repositories use tape, dontchaknow). A PDF is generally considered more acceptable as evidence.

Does anybody know how to save emails from a yahoo account to my desktop? This is on a windows pc. Is the purpose behind saving these e-mails somewhere other than your Inbox to preserve the content, to preserve the secrecy of the content, or to preserve your privacy ?

It sounds as if the OP is using a web app to access his emails. Personally, I would use a proper email client that allows exports and backups. I use Firefox am sure the other heavyweights will do it. I regularly back up to a remote hard disc that is under my control, and as it only writes once a month or so I am not unduly worried about failure. I still have one that's over 15 years old.
