Now the dust has settled, I wonder why the hell it was decided that this was the best way to decide drawn matches?
Soccer is a team sport ... surely the team should win or lose together ?
In ice hockey they play another 20 minute period ... and keep playing extra periods until someone scores ... the team wins or loses together.
You could remove players from each team to increase space/time in extra time.
There's got to be a better way to decide a team sport match, surely ... or does everyone else like them ?

Even tossing a coin wouldn't subvert the team ethos and create the opportunity to vilify the unlucky ones.
But the 'founding fathers of football' or perhaps the TV companies, came up with this idea.
High drama I suppose but I'd prefer to see the best team win.

They used to have replays, unlimited in number in some competitions. This was scrapped when increased commercialisation, t.v. specifically, needed predictable schedules and time slots.

I guess everything now is time managed as Ricco says I think it would be better to keep adding on the minutes seems such a pressure on a few individuals who then(well in this case) are trolled for failing to score.

Penalties as we know now we're introduced in the 70s, however I'm sure they were used at some point many years ago.
Before it's introduction, Mr Stabby is not far wrong and games which needed a result were replayed and if still drawn then lots were drawn.
As much a lottery that it is, it must be admitted that a shoot out is quite a spectacular event of pressure and intense atmosphere.

Don't deny the drama of it thebfg ... but it puts focus on individual rather than team. And in an unperfect world unsuccessful individuals are vilified unfairly. Rog

It could be argued that the team is the individuals.
Am I right In saying the euro final had never gone to penalties prior to this one?

I believe its the fairest end result, you could start getting creative and say its goes on shots on target, but then a team can park the bus and just have the striker smash balls at the goals all day hoping for a draw.
With penalties everything is equal to start.

With penalties everything is equal to start. They tried doing it on corners at one point but decided it had to be decided on goals. Not sure if that decision was before or after the use of drawing lots.

On a very good day I could score a penalty against the Italian giant and save one from Ronaldo. I might need 20 or 30 attempts, especially for the latter, but it is doable. I was just a pub team keeper. It's a lottery and undermines all the skill, sweat and tears teams undergo in reaching the final of a tournament.

I agree Clinton Cool. Scoring a try/goal is a process developed by teamwork, with many hands/feet touching the ball and perhaps adding individual touches of brilliance on the way before the final player dots it down/knocks it in ... very often the final scorer being irrelevant to the play involved to reach that point. The shootout puts the individual (goalie and taker) in the spotlight and under intense pressure ... a level of pressure not achieved in the game, after all Kane scored on the rebound which is not allowed in the shootout. I realise it is what it is ... but I would have thought football fans would have been dead against this method of deciding ... I'd prefer reducing players each team, and play 15 min periods until someone scores ... that's the game after all and best team wins Rog

We had golden ball and silver ball but they stopped that, never did know why.

We had golden ball and silver ball but they stopped that, never did know why. Beckham, most overrated player ever, took the golden balls.
