He was also the best long passer of his generation. That's all he had though. He was totally lacking in heading ability, could barely run, was unable to construct in tight situations and had no tricks. Regardless of what he garbled during his various interviews, football was always about him, ahead of the team. He was largely responsible for changing football from a tough game into a celebrity dominated circus. There was never any chance of England succeeding in any way, while Beckham was around the team. His influence was corrosive and his abilities way insufficient to make up for that.
