I had decided to upgrade the fuel filter system on Sabina H. (basically a salty water boat)
At present The main engine only has the built in Daewoo engine filter. After discussing the options with the fitter it was decided to fit a Racor 500MAM 10 micron fuel filter, as a pre filter (retaining the original engine filter) it is such a fast change filter with a spin off top and drop in filter (literally seconds to change).
However I was describing the system I was going to fit to a tug skipper I know and he said
"no you don't want to do it like that I've got a pair of filters with change over valves and washable filters you can have"
Now the problem I have is which system do I go for ?
The twin system is obviously the fastest ..... but not by much. the turbine system on the racor is better at separating water ...... but I don't know by how much The single filter will fit on existing steel framework The twin with valves will need a new frame fabricating.
Bugger ....... I don't know which way to jump

I don't know which way to jump Hmm, if I've got this straight in my head surely the Racor will need priming and bleeding after new filter is in whereas the twin filters will already be ready to go when switched over Phil

I have been told that if you turn off the stop valve, take the to off, change the filter, turn on the fuel valve slightly you can watch the fuel fill the bowl when it gets to the top you turn the valve off spin the top on and turn the fuel open fully. You're dead right if it was the sort of tank/system on a narrowboat. The bottom of Sabina's fuel tank is about 4 foot above the bilge

I have been told that if you turn off the stop valve, take the to off, change the filter, turn on the fuel valve slightly you can watch the fuel fill the bowl when it gets to the top you turn the valve off spin the top on and turn the fuel open fully. You're dead right if it was the sort of tank/system on a narrowboat. The bottom of Sabina's fuel tank is about 3 foot above the bilge sod it .... all I was trying to do was change the height of tank above bilge figure but somehow I sodded up the whole thing !!!

The lumpy water forums like YBW, Cruiser Forums will have scads of info and expert opinion on filtration. For offshore I'd prefer a changeover system, especially if a single engine, fuel probs rarely occur on a nice calm day but more likely a heavy sea when it's all going wrong. If space allows about add the Racor to the existing filter and framework, and have the twin setup in parallel on a new frame, that gives three options. ISTR some setups include a pressure/vacuum gauge to help tell if/when/how the filters are plugging.

I have gone for twin filters for both engines. Works like a charm had to change one in a force 6 took seconds. All filters are fully primed etc so just turn the taps and away it goes.

as I said I had been dithering ........ probably because I had just forked out 200 smackeroos on the filter probably the best answer is to use the double washable filter system that the tug skipper has offered me. I might try and see if I can back the Racor for credit .........
