I like GSDs and border collies, we have as well as Taff the collie a French bulldog called Hugo he is as thick as a brick completely untrainable unless its food related but generally a cute dog, he isnt ours but just boards with us full time!!!

We always had lurchers. My bitch who was a mongrel and probably a whippet with a bit of collie but not enough to make her crazy was a really nice animal. Battersea dogs home the one in Battersea not Windsor.
1989-2005 I was lucky enough to have the 1991-2005 bit she died on my lap on my boat and pissed all over me. I remember the warm feeling.
Afterwards I did have another whippet cross collie from Battersea dogs home near Windsor but she was more of a collie in fact possibly just a sheep dog and completely mental with a tendency to try to kill other bitches randomly. I found someone better suited who sorted her out with proper training. Lovely dog she was to be fair and incredible leaping from boat to towpath..
Strange coincidence was the bloke who came to check me out as a good dog owner was on canal world. He still is actually..

I like big dogs ... the bigger, the better. It's not an aggression thing ... it's not a status thing. It's just easier to give them a pat without squatting down or having to bend Rog

I've never met a dog I didn't like but I've met plenty of humans who qualify for that. I can't 100% agree with that as I have come across one or two dogs that were sneaky, nasty tempered or just downright untrustworthy and dangerous.
However I definitely have met a hell of a lot more humans that fall into those categories.
I am fond of collies and collie crosses, they tend towards the nutty but the worst ones are usually because they are bored out of their skulls. they need to be kept occupied all the time.
My childhood companion was a ...... mostly collie retriever cross. a loveable, child friendly nutcase. We were lucky to have her for about 14 years.
Again rescued, possibly a runaway, She was close to being a target for a farmers 12 bore until rescued by my sister

Like lots of dogs... We had a Finnish laphund which was an odd breed in that she didn't really like other dogs, didn't really gel with people but had a wonderful quirky nature. Ace hunter but not good at killing rats effectively. 2 cavalier spaniels whilst the kids were young ..they were ok Mum had several GSD's..none made old bones Freya is the most intelligent dog I've owned but hard work to ensure I'm in control. However love her and she is extremely placid and gentle. Having few issues with separation anxiety but I will get there with her. Always wanted a Leonburger ..they are my all time fav dog but they are huge
I do not particularly like some of the pit bull breeds but thats because Ive had a few scary encounters

A geyser who lives near the ranch has an Ibizan Hound. Really pretty dog that is it was collected from Spain as a stray and rehomed in England.
I'm a fan of athletic dogs which can move fast and take a rabbit. The Ibizan is a good example.

We keep meeting boaters who have rescued dogs imported from abroad ... I think the last one was from Romania.
Wouldn't have thought we were running out of strays to the point we have to import them.

That's a fair point. Maybe there is some sort of cachet thing going on with having an unusual breed.
Another dog I really like is the Schipperke or Belgian barge dog.
Looks like a really nice compact little animal to have aboard the boat.

Rog I don't think we are but the criteria here for a rescue dog can be quite strict...maybe these foreign imports are easier to adopt Plus the stories told of the cruelty some of these dogs experience makes them desirable for people. A rescue near here takes in lots of ex breeding dogs and rescued a lot from Ireland

If we get a dog, it will be from the RSPCA.

If we get a dog, it will be from the RSPCA. I tried several rescue places as that's what I wanted but my house didn't pass the guidelines..no grass..no 6ft fence and daffodils growing plus they said that socialising them would be difficult so I suppose preferred to keep them isolated in kennels Whatever.... I desperately needed a companion and Freya popped up on line... the rest is history

Well said metanoia ... pretty much our situation. We've never needed to seek out a dog ... they've always been dropped in our lap. No judgement being made, just reporting facts Rog
