I’ve just heard the river soar is closed, because of an issue with ratcliffe lock. Anybody know any more?

Not the same area but speaking of gate damage this happened at Bunbury at some point recently: Probably a vehicle strike but it's an intriguing one. Credit : this is a stolen image. The lower ground paddle casting to right of picture is basically destroyed. I wonder what they will do about that. Could it be a failure of the pin or pot at the bottom of the gate and the beam caused the damage to the paddle? Seems to have gone in the wrong direction for that. I've always harboured a suspicion that it would be the pots breaking which would start causing problems on locks which are not routinely maintained. The hole gets bigger and bigger then the thing cracks up. I've seen cases where the mitre has been shaved down to stop leaks when the real problem is the pot getting worn out. Of course it is a big job to replace these items but it does need doing.

Would be a good one for head goon TonyDunkley to cast his eye over and comment.

Think there is a photo out there that shows the damage done to the ground paddle thingymegig as well as the gate.

Half of it seems to have been sheared off. Bad news and intriguing to see how/if that gets fixed.

Isn't that the issue C&RT announced would be slightly delayed in fixing because it can't be done without a crane ?

Rubbish, . . if there was anything excessively worn, collapsed, or broken up at the bottom of the heel post, the gate would have dropped a few inches and be hanging from the anchor plate by the collar. The gate has been lifted enough for the collar to come off the anchor plate, . . and the only way that could have happened is either by it being lifted off by an uphill boat in the bottom chamber, or possibly by the balance beam being clouted by a vehicle reversing up the steep slope alongside the middle set of gates.

Probably a vehicle then. I was wandering off a bit with my other theory and was not referring specifically to this incident. I imagine the residents probably know what happened.

I'd put money on it being a vehicle - and probably one of C&RT's own small lorries, or one belonging to their useless contractors. The bullshit stoppage info on C&RT's website says -- "Canal closure due to one of the middle set of lock gates becoming unseated, a crane will be required to lift back into position.", . . if it was a boat that lifted the gate off the heel post anchor they'd be shouting about it from the rooftops !

Stuff on facebook says a bow caught in the missing plank hole and lifted the gate. So CRT maintenance, or lack of...

Ratcliffe Lock is affected by the same problems that both the old lock and this 'new' one have always had following on immediately after serious prolonged flooding. Why don't you take A41 round there and see for yourself ? You're only a few minutes away, . . even with the wrong reduction gear ratio, and the world's slowest L & L shortboat.

He has other boats I'm sure they are faster than yours. Not whilst it’s sunk it’s not. I imagine it’s in a sorry state after being sat in the bottom for so long.
