If your new to boating and haven't met or used any of the fuel boats before, I would highly recommend you do so.
Firstly it is sooo convenient to have bags of coal delivered directly to the roof of your boat, secondly it saves the hassle of getting your boat into and out of marina's for taking on diesel (especially if your on a widebeam like us) & thirdly in most cases they are actually cheaper for gas/coal & wood than the marina's.
Added to the fact they are out there in all kinds of weather, all year round plying their trade, keeping to their schedules.....they are boaters like the rest of us. They have a wealth of information especially regarding "their patch" of the canals.
Most provide diesel, coal, wood & bottles of gas along with a range of other smaller items, Brasso, stuff to pour down your loos, some do fenders ect.
For the Grand Union I would recommend...
Jules Fuels (Richard & Jules) from Apsley Marina up past Braunston marina - just google Jules Fuels for contact details and further info on what they supply and a more detailed description of the area they cover.
M and P canal carrying company (Mary & Phil) covering from Cowley Peachey up to Milton Keynes - just google M and P canal carrying company for contact details and further info on what they supply and a more detailed description of the area they cover.
We have regularly used both of the above companies, and found their service, pricing & customer service to be Excellent.
Hopefully others will be along shortly to recommend their choice of fuel boats.

Funnily enough having been boating for years and had our own boat for nearly 6 years, yesterday was the first time I've bought from a fuel boat. Simply because we cruise a lot and just never seem to meet a fuel boat when we've needed it. I think it is different if you are a more static liveaboard staying in one place for 14 days etc.
Oh I tel a lie we also bought from the Nene chappie a few years ago.
Anyway I took diesel and coal from Auriga near Rugby. Seemed a reasonable price, he was very friendly and helpful. I think diesel can be found cheaper, but you are paying a bit extra for the convenience. And he insisted on lugging the coal onto our well deck.

You are right, it would be a bit of an inconvenience for a leisure boater to try and find one of the fuel boats unless they were moored up in one spot for a few days and make the arrangements in advance, so they would know if a fuel boat was likely in the area or not at the same time as them. But it really is a Great service for us liveaboards, even those of us who CC, especially with not having a car to lug bags of coal / btls of gas and such I just sometimes forget that we aren't all in the "same boat" and the many different uses of boats on the system....leisure / weekenders / liveaboard on the cut / liveaboard in marina's / hirerer's / CC'ers etc etc

Yes, on my recommendation Alan has put some considerable effort in to Bletchley since you last saw him.

Don't forget Junior on Halsall if you're on the four counties circuit.
If you're up the Maccy then there is the Renaissance boat, the name of which escapes me at present (age thing no doubt).
And of course Mark on Callisto from Warwick upto the Soar.
If you visit Lock 13 all the contact details are there.
Keep trade on the canals....use a coal boat where possible.

Can i plug myself? (No not like that!) Actually i believe there is no moderation on here so i can say whatever the hell i like i guess! Fuel Boat Halsall is a partnership between myself, Brian and Ann Marie from Coalboat Alton (Macc & Peak Forest). We cover the full Four Counties Ring (Audlem > Middlewich > Wheelock Fortnightly and Wheelock > Great Heywood > Audlem monthly), plus Barbridge to Ellesmere Port, River Weaver & Lower Macc once a month. We also cover the Caldon Canal tri-yearly (monthly by van). We sell Diesel, Coal, Gas, fenders and most other consumables you would need. If we don't stock it we'll order it in for you. We also offer a Pump Out service. We offer a regular & reliable service all year round and attempt to stick to a set published schedule. We have a website which is regularly updated and i try to post on Facebook every couple of days where i am and where I'm going.

The photo was taken from the offside at Sale Cruising Club on the Bridgewater Canal just outside Manchester back in the summer. I was lucky enough to enjoy their hospitality for an evening for an England match during Euro 2016.

We would always be happy to buy from 'fuel boats' even if we didn't really need anything, as it's a service I think deserves to be held in esteem. Can always fit another sack of coal or some (dry!) logs (have been sold wet ones) in the cratch.
