Of course there is also Commercial Boat Services who occasionally sell narrow boats. Note to Paul63: this is an in-joke and should be ignored. It's ok, I didn't get it anyway. Yes we are prepared for some long road trips, we have a good idea what we are looking for but as we have seen on some YouTube videos, sometimes things you think you want and all that.

One reason I found not to get too picky about the Broker.
Rugby Boats - during the 6 months I was looking, they never had a boat in that I was remotely interested in and could afford - just checked and all boats are either sold or under offer...
ABNB - close to being the same, except for one boat, turned out to be well over priced (even the owner who showed me around agreed and said he would be open to a significant price reduction), I didn't want to offend the owner but was annoyed that I had travelled about 100 miles to visit a boat which was advertised at 50k but worth at best 40k, I just said I'd give feedback to ABNB - eventually 2 months later ABNB sent me an email asking for my feedback...

We spent two years looking ... focused on Internet mostly but then physically visiting boats of interest. In the two years (during which we also visited a number of new build yards) we only saw two boats we REALLY fancied one of which we bought. Look at as many boats as you can. I can virtually guarantee that twelve months after you buy a boat there'll be things you wish were different. You really do have to kiss a lot of frogs Rog

I'll echo the thoughts that I suspect it will be the boat that dictates which broker you use.
When you find the one, that will be the one.

It was an educational/self improvement exercise as he is a selfish beast. I always give him a little of my dinner, he won't part with any of his. Next time I think I will get a bitch......

Seriously, @paul63, good luck in your quest. Keep an open mind....
eta - is there a specific reason for under 40ft (like a mooring or something?).

Hi and thanks, not mooring reason no, we have seen boats around 40ft that have everything we need, and obviously the smaller the boat the cheaper to buy and run. Also there are only the 2 of us, no pets, so we don't need anything too big.

We manage fine with a 35ft. Easy to turn round too.

We bought a new Liverpool boat in 2004.We'd looked at second hand boats & there were a fair few we wiped our feet as we got off them ! I know Liverpool boats are Marmite, but ours has never put a foot wrong in 17 years.Don't stick with 40',there's two of us & 55' is a smashing size.Be ready to change your ideas as the perfect boat will find you !

I know they are a bit odd looking but I actually think the east/west narrow boats are quite nice.
You get the feeling of a lot of room inside due to the lack of cabin tumblehome and the fitout is quite pleasant.
I went on one once and despite already having judged the boat from outside as not a Good Thing I was pleasantly surprised by the thing. I think I could live with that although it does take a bit of doing to get over the square cabin shape.
If I did get a narrow boat again it would have to be the Stainless steel one which Ted who made Dulcinea apparently constructed. I think it's called Mithril. I would like to find out where this boat is.
