Got Makita at home, impact driver and drill. On the boat got a set of Lidl power tools, cheap as chips, batteries all swappable. Fine for occasional use.

Makita every time.
True story. Friend bought a Makita small angle grinder. Used it all year in Spain cutting stainless but it emitted smoke last time he used, it by which time it was 18 months old he reckoned. Brought it back to the UK and I had a look at it. Found the trigger switch had burnt out, really well burnt up. Asked Makita how much for the part quoting the model and serial number and approximate purchase date as he never keeps receipts. There reply was "please pack it up, a courier will collect it tomorrow" It came back 2 days later, rebuilt, new cable, new tools. No Charge. Can't say better than that.

when we were doing the fairground stuff, we mainly used makita - I'd have preferred millwake (can't spell that) but the makita stuff was a good compromise between cost and longevity.
I've got a full set of Ebrauer on the boat - rechargeable everything... despite being quite cheap, the've done me well - the only thing I've had to replace was the drill as I burned it out drilling way too many holes through the 6mm sides.
Must admit, I do miss the belt sanders for making square edges round - prettying up wedges for packing to make them look MORE than just a lump of 3 x 2.

Top service from a decent company, won't get that one your budget brands.

I think you have to look at things the Ricco way sometimes,
I remember on one occasion when we had a massive amount of unistrut, cable trays and data baskets to instal, I went out and bought 5 incredibly cheap small anglegrinders (Lidl? Aldi?), they came with an assortment of grinding and cutting discs that on their own almost came to the value of the whole kits. I needed three but bought more because I expected them to go pop. At the end of the job two of them were still in their plastic wrappings .... only the dics had been used from them, I gave the two lads who were working for me one each, gave one to my sister, put one in Sabina's engine rooma and the other in Shapfell's toolbox. that was about 10 or 11 years ago and the one in Sabina only died a few years ago, the one in Shapfell got forgotten and left on a quay after drydocking and was never seen again. I think my sister still has hers.

are you mad? - FAR too labour intensive And I thought you would have been among the first to utter the words "don't knock it till you've tried it". Easier than getting the jenny out, finding an unused sanding sheet, and no noise. However I admit I can't be bothered with the oilstone method of sharpening the cutter anymore - a bench grinder is much faster.

for orbutal sanders sealley and for battery hand tools Milwaukee, extremely good equipent Milwaukee no cheapee. For once I think Ricco has the right idea. Very true but it lasts a long time and thats what I want in the end

Sander from Argos 15 quid. Buy a new one when it packs in. Sandpaper from Home Bargains, £1.50 for 10 sheets from memory. My sander was Black & Decker and I think was about £35. It's done good service over many years and was almost half the price of many reputable brands when new ... I have no complaints (other than it died at an inopportune moment). I noticed when searching on line that B&Q are still doing them at £35 and an offer of two for £50 ... but there were none in stock locally. Consequently I've gone for a 'better' more expensive item ... time will tell. Rog

Got my Makita sander today and oh wow !
So much easier, quieter, smoother and more powerful than my old one ... I wish I'd had it for sanding the first side down.
I wouldn't have believed how much better it could be for just over double the price ... well worth the extra.
