I have always like throwing ropes and about ten minutes ago I did one of my best ever. Put a large bowline in end of rope and tossed it up onto a 10ft high "no mooring" sign which was about 15 feet away from me. Got it in one and now moored up.
It's ok it's not terrible just a wild mooring someone has decided to dictate where you can stop with signs. Nothing will happen. Bit noisy from the Brunel Moulsford railway bridge but it was time to stop.
Pleased with it but as I can not access the bank I will have to try to flick it back off in the morning. Or perhaps use the dinghy.
Anyone else have any good rope tricks?

No.
However ... a boat in front of me today gestured that they intended to take a mooring, and I therefore held back to facilitate the process.
It was a fairly tight gap, but just big enough.
As the gent manouevered a neighbour appeared and invited them to throw a rope.
The lady on board very methodically coiled the centre line in her right hand, took aim, and cast the line towards the towpath and the waiting hands ... but forgot to let go with her left.
Needless to say the rope landed in the canal to become a prop hazard ... it was quite amusing.
By the time the rope was retrieved they were into the bank.

That's a relief Mr Stabby ... when I saw you'd posted on the thread I was slightly concerned what tricks you'd got upto with ropes. How's the thumb ? Rog

I can't throw ropes - obviously...when someone tries to help me moor up, I dread the words "throw me a line" being shouted... much in the same way as when I'm walking past a footy match in the local park/pitch and a ball goes out of play in MY direction... that phrase "kick us the ball back " fills me with fear - I pretend I've got my music on SO loud in my headphones I can't hear them - alas, I can't use that when boating!

When I read the title I thought this might be a report on a new pointless Olympic 'sport'. I thought it might include some typical BBC sensationalism. You know, a limited vocabulary that describes everything as either 'incredible' or 'unbelievable' and that every single event this year appears to re write the history of mankind.
My apologies, I was mistaken.

For distance throwing I always divide the coiled rope into equal (ish) parts and throw both coils of rope at the same time, you get better distance and a higher success rate this way Phil

The 'throw a line' shout always seems slightly ridiculous on a canal ... a 4ft deep muddy ditch.
On rivers I get it, with a possibly unhelpful current ... but a canal !

I tried to hoick the loop off the post from the boat and thought I had done it but I had in fact managed to double it. so a trip ashore in the wobbly red herring was needed.
All fascinating.

Is that karma from the no mooring sign getting its sweet revenge.
