Quaysider is just showing that he has the courage and fortitude to delve into those murky depths.... I'd better get in here before mrstabby beats me to it and starts talking about me being used to digging around in dirty areas! Point of order here (not to you Patty.... you get it) but on this occasion waders wouldn't have been any use because in order to reach the bit I needed to fiddle with, I had to put my face down to the water and reach right under... and even then my arms weren't really long enough. I'm going to buy a snorkel set the next time I see one. I HAD tried the endoscopic camera I'd bought in Lidl before xmas but the light on that wasn't bright enough... nor was the worklight I put in a plastic bag and dropped through the weed hatch either. Sometimes you just have to get your hands - and eventually "crocless" feet to feel along the skeg. Anyway - A sleepless night had me in screwfix Stoke when it opened... buying 5 10mm threaded bars (they'll come in handy), 5 slit discs (expecting the one on my grinder to break when I started cutting the box) a big box of M10 100mm bolts (back up plan to bolt down the hatch) and a cheap tap and dye set (expecting to bugger the 2 I already have in the process of getting one decent hole) The trouble was, I couldnt bring myself to cut up a perfectly good 1m length of box to just to tap a thread in - instead, I drilled a hole either side of the existing one, tapped a thread in them both, and then bent a right angle (ish) on the threaded bar to hold it down under tension. I did both sides on the assumption that the thread won't survive TOO many undoings/redoings so when the first goes, I've already got a 2nd ready to use - I also bent a 2nd bar and put that somewhere safe. Plan c is a bit like TD's with a bit of 3x2 and some wedges to put in either side - that is also somewhere handy (although it will be the end of my Spanish windlass - ) (no matter, I can always use the bar now in stead ) So there we are ... tootling along again with only a morning lost buggering about.

Belt and braces !!! Good idea. You now are under no pressure to engineer anything more sophisticated. Keep that for a long winter mulling over !
As Andrew is wont to say "that's great Maaan"

I’m sure you have greased the threads on the threaded bar...

That reminds me. The picture the bananas are located on is quite a nice old item I found in a charity shop. "a general view of London" Nice to see a bit of optimism!

A mole wrenches on each side would do, surely.
