Well - here's an update on the Replacement ... I met a chap (coded welder type) on ... let's call it a dating app! ;-) ANYWAY... in passing (and instead of anything more carnal cause "you're too old mate") I mentioned I was gonna call in at my dads next week and weld a new on to a bit of bar. Couple of days later he popped up (steady) and announced he'd made me one - and could drop it off after tea. SO here it is... lovely M16 ... and sprayed sparkly gay silver. I have to admit to being really touched at the kindness of the fella... I may be too old but he clearly sees something worthwhile in forging a friendship with me... and I LOVE a welder so you never know... perhaps I can Grind (every pun intended) him down with time. Right... excuse me, I'm going to lust over it a bit more before I fit it in position.

Not in the same league but I mentioned to a neighbour how much I liked crochet table cloths and how I couldn't find any the right size for me coffee table.... few days later she gifts 2 then 6 drink coasters.... However she's not lusting after my body..... which is good.... It was just a gift.

Is the top nut loose to be used as a locknut? I only have one nut, welded. and lock with brute force.

Bloody roughneck Brummies π€£ - no wonder a hammer is referred to as a Birmingham Screwdriver π quaysider is obviously a man of skill, style, and sophistication - a sharp eye for detail and a man who will not settle for second best or thatβll do π»π

I think I'll put up with it a bit longer. Like quaysider did do with his lightweight unit until he met a craftsman.

This is my favourite Birmingham Screwdriver photo from here www.standingwellback.com/birmingham-screwdriver/I must admit the @socks shagged rudder saga reminded me of just how piss poor inland waterway craft design often is - mostly born out of a cottage industry approach which often has garden gate fabricators and designers at the fore.

Exactly.
Weed hatches, bearing in mind they can cause the boat to ship vast amounts of water, should be much better designed.
On canal boats I will use a shaft hook to clear the propeller if possible and steer clear of opening the weedhatch. On Dulcinea there are weed boxes up to deck level. No water can get in boat unless/until they rust through.
Apparently some narrow boats have weed hatch to deck level. This seems so much more sensible than the Mickey mouse sink-yer-boat type usually encountered.
I'd like to see a bolt on each corner or two on each long side fixed down with an eye nut. Eye nuts are great as you can put a bar in and tighten it up without needing a spanner.
