Exactly. Weed hatches, bearing in mind they can cause the boat to ship vast amounts of water, should be much better designed. On canal boats I will use a shaft hook to clear the propeller if possible and steer clear of opening the weedhatch. On Dulcinea there are weed boxes up to deck level. No water can get in boat unless/until they rust through. Apparently some narrow boats have weed hatch to deck level. This seems so much more sensible than the Mickey mouse sink-yer-boat type usually encountered. I'd like to see a bolt on each corner or two on each long side fixed down with an eye nut. Eye nuts are great as you can put a bar in and tighten it up without needing a spanner. Please sir, Loddon has a weedhatch up to deck level, you need long arms or a hook to reach the prop

School boy error number 297 - in the flurry of potential 'welder romance', I may have been guilty of thinking things were bigger than they are - ergo, the lovely weedhatch clamp he made me, doesn't ruddy fit... no matter HOW Much grease! Anyway - take 2... he turned up yesterday with Mk2 - And a bucket of logs and some coal to try... this one would be a keeper if I wasn't too old for him. Shame really cause if I had a checklist, a 5ft 7 stoke lad, welder with own home, car, dogs, fish and inherited springer would be RIGHT at the top. Wish I'd lied about my age.. Anyway - here's the new one. this one DOES fit and is already lubed up and in situ.

I haf a few male friends who are not in my 'age bracket'... but then I'm not looking for romance just good friends. Anyway age is immaterial.. if u get on just go for it. It'll last as long as it does. Lying about age is never a gud idea.

Wouldn't it be better to turn the bar over so the nut is on the underside, that would remove strain from the weld round the nut, the weld now purely stopping the nut turning, rather than taking the strain?

it's not ME bothered about my age... it's him - I don't consider it a barrier but unfortunately, he does - which I have to respect. Still, he's very handy for small spaces, always visits with useful things and his mum likes the idea of 'me' lol.
Gotta learn to walk before I start running again I suppose... baby steps, frog-kissing and all that.
Before that however, I need to begin my 2023 routes and sort my new bss out.

not yet - agreeing a return is difficult because I already returned 1 of them... the NON faulty one - it's becoming a pita but whatever they say, it doesn't work and as such, IS going back by hook or by crook.
