Stern fender caught on lower gates as lock filled? Then lock emptied to settle boat on the bottom.

I know the boat but not who owns it now.It used to be an air B&B in Brum owned by one of the trip boat/restaurant boat/hotel boat workers. It was a really smart vessel...

He's facing up hill which is odd ... and a photo from the side in the MEN showed the nose sunk.
I wondered if he'd flooded through the bow doors, but it appears he has a closed cratch.
Possible if he was reversing down the lock he may have cilled it.
No doubt all will be revealed in due course.

Or reversing down the lock and hooked stern up on lower gates?

I don't know how this can happen. I would have thought there would be enough time to spot that the boat was hanging up and drop the paddle before things got to this stage?

Sad, seen it on Rochdale Canal FB. My presumptions are the same as everyone's, though why he might be reversing down the 9? Doubtful. We'll find out.

Since they sited more permanent moorings in Castlefield, and restricted/enforce visiting periods onto Bridgewater, more folks seem to moor above the bottom lock as it's C&RT.
Only mentioned it's a possibility he was reversing ... we're all just speculating.

Looks a little long for the lock methinks? whatever their day has been ruined and 9 people in the boat might be judged as excessive?

Hell's teeth 9 people in a private narrow boat. That's rather a lot, if true.
You'd definitely want them seated and instructed not to move about too much.
If the boat was a bit long perhaps the bow fender got caught under the cill somehow.
there does seem to be some protrusion on the cill itself. Perhaps a guard iron or something out of place.
It's very bad if this is related to a fender. It is so easy to put in weak links on fenders. People should not have these sorts of incidents just because of a fender.

There are two boats called Elapsed Time in the register, a Delph Marine at 65' and a Reeves (Napton) at 70'. So yes, quite a longish boat.
