I experienced similar with a rental property. Β£15K out of pocket and god knows how much it cost me in mental anguish. It is a big step to sell a house and buy a boat. My opinion, for what it's worth: If you're going to do this, right now is an excellent time. I believe that house prices are about to experience a huge crash. I believe house prices will continue to rise. The elephant in the room is higher interest rates which will be fairly inevitable to stave off a sharp rise in inflation which is looking equally increasingly inevitable.

My opinion, for what it's worth: If you're going to do this, right now is an excellent time. I believe that house prices are about to experience a huge crash. I believe house prices will continue to rise. You could be right. In the longer term though, the economic pointers suggest it's unlikely. The recent rise was triggered by a combination of the stamp duty freeze and injection of borrowed cash into the economy (quantitative easing). While this may continue for a while yet it seems unlikely that creating money out of nothing can continue in the longer term. Apart from anything else it's inflationary. This is already being seen across the pond where inflation has hit 9%. They lead we follow, not just in Afghanistan. High inflation creates all kinds of risks not least, ultimately, to the very existence of the currency in question. It seems likely that the money supply will be turned down (higher interest rates) before inflation goes too far, regardless of the trauma that will cause many people. If that wasn't enough, house prices are now more unaffordable than they have ever been. I could be wrong of course.

Believe me we have done, having rented out a previous house and had loads of grief, not getting rent and having the house basically trashed we don't want that again. All the time we would be on a boat we'd just be worrying and wondering what was happening in the house and that would spoil the whole boating experience. I know some people are only trying to give advice(apart from the negative one) but we have been planning this for years. It's not as though we've never lived outside of a house, we lived in a small 2 berth caravan through a cold winter then 2 years ago we toured full time in a campervan for nearly a year so we know what problems can arise with that type of lifestyle. I ask because we are looking at houses at the minute and every house is selling, fast! not to worry, posted before reading your other post..

You will need that 12.5k to cover the increases in boat prices of late. but by the time we come to buy, maybe around 3 months or so boat prices usually drop off season. But thanks again for your positive input. I believe boat prices will not drop for a good while yet, every month there is a new tv programme or a media article saying how great it is to live/be on the canals, social media is rife with people buying up boats to live the dream life, till these people get bored and go back to land, prices will remain inflated.

You may be right, and it might be one of these poor deluded souls I pick on, beating them down on their asking price with my cash in hand.

But thanks again for your positive input. I note your sarcasmπ. I am a very positive person, and Iβd encourage anybody with an interest in canal boating to think about buying a boat. My point about keeping your house was meant in a positive manner. I have a couple of friends who are in dire situations because they sold off their houses to go boating. Re the boat increase comment, they have gone up a huge amount over the last year or so. Sorry youβve taken all this as a dig at your dreams. Il make no more comment on youβre posts.

I'm fully aware of the pitfalls and risk so if it goes pear shaped I can only blame myself. I don't want to reach 80 and regret not giving it a go. You are right, I have been watching boat prices for the last year or so and they have increased but we have taken this into account. What we have seen also is a vast difference in prices for same like for like boats. I apologise if I have responded in a sarcastic manner. I think I am done here.

Chris the Flouncer!
Some people really are odd, ask a question, get feedback, nothing horrible, don't like it so storm off.

How very odd.
He seemed happy enough here, and I can't see anything to take umbridge at on this thread.
It can be mildly annoying when folks answer questions you never asked, but I wouldn't have expected the 'full flounce'

I really didnβt see anything to flounce about, I mean no one called him a twat. Does anyone who looks at the darkside, know if heβs appeared there? It would be interesting to compare responses.

He posted on there a few days ago about helping out boaters to gain experience.
I think some people just want you to confirm/agree with what they have in their heads, not interested in any other thoughts on the subject.
I imagine if there was a mod on here he would of been the kind to ask for a lock on the thread.
