Slightly odd as all of my ancestors on both sides of the family were keen sailors but I have never sailed other than for about 5 minutes in a dinghy after which the outboard went on.
It seems like it could be an interesting solution to the whole round the world conundrum. Diesel scarcity seems to be a big issue lately and also fuel tank/wallet size.
Anyone tried it ?
Is it in fact the Best Option ?

It just looks like a lot of effort to me, when you can just fire up an engine, hell a solar powered electric silent jobby also.
Not for me im afraid, although some of the boats do look majestic.

Skip to 20minutes, the first 19 are of him dogging walking through bushes!

woah, we have the slough in Beduff It may surprise you to know I was born about half a mile from that miserable ditch. ETA Your vid effectively portrays the essential boring shittiness of the locale. The director is a true auteur.

We had dinghy sailing holidays in Cornwall as kids, my dad had an enterprise wooden dinghy, we hired a motor sailer. Did that for about 10 years. Dad hired a yacht thingy for family holiday in the Greek islands when he retired. Sometime later I went with some friends of my sister on a bareboat hire in the Caribbean, a lovely 18m Italian yacht.
Speeding along on wind power is very satisfying, but sailing far from land is a bit boring because nothing much to look at. This is the reason why the canals are more interesting.,

I got my RYA L1 Rag and stick on Hollingworth lake when I lived near it. Also, far more fun, RYA L2 Plank, rag and stick. re The Slough, does that rhyme with chuff or how?

sailing is a nice idea, rarely put into practice.
I once lived in Dartmouth which has a harbour chokkablok full of sailing yachts (well they have masts and rattly wire rigging to keep the seagulls away, but apart from that they mostly don't sail, and even if they do, the vast majority motor out into the open ocean before they decide to pull on ropes and let the salty stuff splash their faces). Strangely the same boats can often be seen lowering their sails when the wind gets a bit breezy, and making a fast re-entry to the harbour.
I the good old days, before every would-be sailor discovered low maintenance plastic boats and marine mortgages, the hardy true sailors made it a point of honour to leave the mooring buoy under sail alone, and to pick up the buoy by heading into the wind with the sails flapping - woe betide the foredeck hand who missed picking up the buoy with the boathook. Engines were very rarely used, to the point that many were never properly maintained and couldn't be relied on.

At Benfleet there was a smashing concrete yacht called Barbarossa, The owner and family went round the world in it and a few times across the Atlantic etc, It always used to impress me when He used to come up Benfleet creek under full sail, drop the sails at the last moment, round up and drop alongside the quay. Hardly ever used the engine ..... we all reckoned because he was too tight to buy diesel Interesting chap He and his wife were a very efficient crew.
Used to sail dinghies years ago when in my teens and used to crew my mates gaffers when ever asked, very relaxing ghosting along off the coast on a nice sunny day.

I would love to take up sailing. Something just a little bigger than a windsurfer. Transportable, cheap to store, but big enough to sit down on/ in. I've no idea if such a thing is available. Sailing seems to have gone out of fashion.
