Also to add for those unfamiliar with the story - Sir Knox-Johnston, a man worthier than most to receive a knighthood, donated his entire purse to Crowhurst's widow. What a bloke. The first voyage of Suhaili after it was built in India was with a 3 man crew, all crew that paid off with him from a BI ship, If I remember correctly Robin Knox-Johnston had been first mate and the second engineer and the radio officer sailed with him. Marconi Marine who employed the radio officer loaned the radio equipment in exchange for the story in the company magazine. I basically remember reading it in the magazine, it was just before my first trip as a Marconi Radio officer and I remember being extremely jealous of the sparks. must have been about 1964

He is scared of the water. Or more accurately, of being in contact with it. Then he is a brave man, living on a boat, especially one with a shower fitted. It is true though, I described the reality of launching a sailing dinghy from a beach and that pretty much killed the deal.

Yeah, but as sailing dinghies go, a wayfarer is pretty much as good as it gets in terms of stability. That coupled with a drysuit, and an able helmsman, which I am sure you are, should not put off a man who single-handedly circumnavigates the ebb and flow of the Thames on a daily basis in a floating beer platform. Anyway, I think you should stop making excuses for him. Let's here from the man himself. I sold my dinghy last week. I must be too old, as socks suggested.

I wasn't making excuses, I was taking the piss. I must be slipping.

It is true though, I described the reality of launching a sailing dinghy from a beach and that pretty much killed the deal. It was actually when you encased me in the body armour with a zip that I could not undo myself that I began to become concerned about your motives. After all one must not discount people's user names in this sort of thing. I am happy to die in an accident in fact it would give me much pleasure in the afterlife and fingers crossed however being zipped up into a contraption attempting to bypass this option by some nutter is outside of my belief system. I can launch a boat but please let's not wear those things with the zip on the back. Thanks. I know people have different approaches to risk but just for the record I am highly tolerant and not interested in using safety equipment.

I told you, you only need that thing when the weather is a bit parky. In the summer it's more of a shorts and t-shirt affair. I was only looking out for your best interests. The water can be quite nippy in spring. But also they seem like a bloody good bit of kit when you launch with an on-shore breeze. Someone needs to hold the boat by the bow for a bit, and this may well mean you are in it up to chest height.

Also that drysuit is the best possible quality - Musto HPX, far too good for the likes of you. And it fitted you like a glove. Or a body-sized condom depending on your perspective.

Come sailing with us on our luxury yacht in the beautiful crystal clear waters of the east coast. Experience a unique day as you let a gentle breeze propel you along the timeless coast of the British isles. Sit back and relax in the company of dolphins as they playfully frolic in the bow wave. Enjoy a selection of our finest gins and hand crafted beers as you soak up the sun on the foredeck.
Reality:
Fear for your life as an unexpected squall hits the boat, shaking it to its very foundation, the rigging hitting a harmonic frequency that has the whole boat vibrating. Cower below, trying to light the gas stove to make a brew to warm your raw freezing hands as another wave slams across the deck, entering the leaking hatch as freezing water trickles down your neck. Worry that you will make the entrance to the harbour as the fierce ebbing tide pushes you inexorably back along the course you have come, a course you have held for hours on end as the driving rain relentlessly cascades into your face.
Finally you reach a safe haven, as the last dying embers of the sun disappear beneath the horizon, to be greeted by the marina bod requesting 35 quid for a nights mooring.
Still, not all days sailing are that good. Some of them can be bloody awful.

One of my earliest experiences was in a very stiff F5, easily gusting to F6, fully reefed, water breaking over the bow (wind over tide), boat slamming into the troughs and wind shrieking like a banshee (or so it seemed) through the shrouds, and when we tacked you had to be so fast or it was goodnight Vienna. It was fucking fantastic and I was disappointed when it was over.
