OK, asked in Halfrds for a car radio, it was £50, and in spite of paying yet another so called electrician, it does not work, most of the, time. It's useless. I had a Tecsun which cost over £60, and one day it stopped working, at least it had a battery. I bought something from Amazon, it is USB with a short special cable, so only works for a few hours. It does not really do what it says, and it's going back. What I want is a portable radio, with a battery that transmits Radio 4. And a clock. What I don't want is fm which transmits adverts, and noises from Islam's, or needs to be re tuned ever time it switches on. In Ye olden days, a portable radio would work, you selected LW or Mw etc, and it worked, all one did was select a station I don't want dab, I want it to work inside my boats, and outside my boat, hanging on the tiller. Budget up to £26

Internet radio using an app and a BT speaker if you have unlimited data. I am not sure what this means, I can get R 4 on my tablet, which means I have to have it plugged in to the USB at the bow. I am constantly having to charge, phone, and tablet, that is bad enough, I just want something that gets power from a battery, and lasts for about six months, and play Radio 4

Is R4 only on the Internet, that is ridiculous. I don't know about data, I get messages about it from my tablet and my phone, but as they are supposed to be unlimited, I just ignore them, and check my bills. I am constantly having to re charge my phone and my tablet, its a pain. I have 600 ah battery power, I dont want to charge up each item twice a day. And I don't want to buy another fucking gadget that lasts six months and needs to be replaced, sorry, I just want a radio that plugs into the mains most of the day, but when unplugged will have a charged battery, and work for another day. The only station I am interested in is R4, and Classic fm, at the moment al I can get is R Lancaster, and other jingles with ads,

It was just a suggestion.

(if you don't want FM don't switch to it ....... unlikely to find a portable without VHF FM on it nowadays

I note it has Bluetooth mode, clock mode and fm mode, this is of no use to me, I have been unable to to set the clock permanently, so really it is total pia. I have followed instructions, but the thing does not understand them!

I have a Roberts stream 83i (not portable, no batteries). It very rarely works satisfactorily on its built in aerial on either DAB or FM unless an external aerial is fitted. It is marginally better if put near one of the bus windows, but is the main reason I favour using a radio app on my phone and a BT speaker.

Best reception for Radio Four usually is on VHF FM the exact frequency changes with where you are in the country but is normally in the same general area on the dial, it is also on 198 Khz on LW. there are area transmitters on MW for radio 4 the frequencies or available on this link www.bbc.co.uk/radio/info/frequencies.shtml

I do not want to carry my phone about, particularly outdoors, so I don't really expect the speaker to pick up from the phone, besides the phone will need constant attention, and as far as I am concerned, its a phone, which will re charge overnight as long as that is all it is asked to do. I know folk with phone fixation are happy to charge at home, in the car, on the train, and at the office, but I really do not want all these things linked up, what happens is that the phone runs out of power, and is of no use. I sometime use it at night, when the tablet has died.

Our point is that you already have the equipment needed to listen to radio 4 - your phone with unlimited data. Ok the sound quality isn’t great from a phone speaker, hence the Bluetooth speaker. I have an Aukey speaker and it lasts several days of normal use between charges, with pretty good sound quality. The reason why you are struggling to find a suitable radio is that the world has moved on and a device that serves only one purpose has been made redundant by a device that serves a myriad of purposes. In other words, virtually no-one buys radios these days! Streaming audio from a phone uses very little power. If your phone won’t last a day, it’s probably because the battery is knackered.

This radio thing I have bought claims to have Bluetooth mode, what does that mean, it has no sound in that mode, but it has a speaker. Phone also has bluetoothmode, so, do I need to spend even more on some shortlived gadget when a portable radio did all these things at minimal cost for a generation.
