A major weakness with smartphones is if the screen gets wet you can't use it. So if you fall in water and need to call 999 it won't do it. Bad weakness there should be a little emergency button on them I feel. A push button phone would be much more useful in the wet emergency. Apparently some phones have an SOS panic button mode, by pressing the power button a certain amount of times, or the power button in combination with the volume buttons. Yes I seem to recall reading about this recently…

A pity it isn't waterproof. Otherwise it looks good.

And since it has an earphone socket it would be fairly easy to connect it to some better speakers.

I know they will get damaged but I bet you could make a quick call first. Even if the phone is dead afterwards at least you might have summoned an ambulance. Smartphone is useless as soon as the screen is wet. Also I have a remarkably tasteful 3310 in semi-translucent orange with blue highlights and a rubberised layer over the keypad - nice. Perhaps it might become collectible. One of my MI6 personal and professional development courses (otherwise known as necking with Evangeline in a punt in summer shade) was focused on the Nokia numerical coding for their button handsets. You have to be careful, and I always am, because some of these including units you yourself have mentioned, are flagged up as terrorist equipment and anyone who mentions them is looked at quite closely. Being a normal type of English geyser you are probably ok but woe betide anyone slightly swarthy looking who does so. Interrogation is one thing but being cast adrift during a force 8 gale in a raft made of pallets is bad news. Damhikt but this is the sort of thing I am thinking of and no you don't want this on your record. Might be 30 years ago but they can, and will, find it and use it against you.

Nuts
it's an unnecessary gadget/change/expense thing I don't need to have a GPS on my phone ..... I know where I am, I have one in the car which is switched off 95% of the time I only need it for the final street indication when I get to the town I want
(although I do sometimes have it on to listen to the "as soon as possible make a U turn" when I decide it's route is bollocks, which is not uncommon).
Before the advent of car GPS units I managed quite adequately with an A to Z which was available for most major towns ..... if it was too small for that you just stopped and asked.
Tracker ? ..... if I need one I'll just borrow a bloodhound
Watch ? don't like wearing one. When I was at sea, my life was ruled by the time. When I left it went in a drawer, later to have my fathers put next to it. It's light so it's time to get up. It's dark ? it's time to go to bed. During the rest of the day I can judge when tea breaks are due (thirsty) or lunch breaks (hungry)
Camera ? got one thanks why should I waste good money to get another one ?
The laptop stays on the table, I use it when I'm there. Otherwise it becomes an addictive distraction to Life
My phone makes phone calls and sends and receives text messages the battery lasts for several days unlike it seems every body elses, as they seem to be constantly on the hunt for somewhere to plug it in.
Why oh why should I spend loads a dosh, or tie myself up to a contract for an expensive and quite fragile unit (that most people seem to spend even more money on by insuring it)
If mine goes bang, I still have my old one in the drawer that works fine, it's just all the letters and numbers have worn off the buttons (doesn't matter I know which ones are which)
I suppose in one way it might be an age thing ...... you seem to need to have gathered a (cough) few grey hairs to realise that "improvements" to your life that new things bring are usually offset by downsides and are quite often pointless in the general scheme of things.
I'll just point out I do have a decent camera but carrying it around with me all the time is pointless and cumbersome. I also have two really good gps unit's, as you say we normally know where we are but if I'm walking through the Scottish Highlands on a mountain in thick snow the GPS is a lifesaver. Having gps on the phone is very useful for when out cycle touring or say walking a local long distance path. I don't want a phone, a camera and the gps because charging is very difficult when out camping in the wild. The phones camera will do and the gps is really useful at junctions of paths in the middle of nowhere. Saves getting the map out. Everything has a use but the phone is very adaptable and really has its uses. Unlike some I rarely use it as a phone. P.s I'm not pressuring anyone to do anything but just explaining the positives of a smart phone after being accused of doing whatever it was Socks said I was doing. P.p.s I don't even have the latest phone, I have a Samsung but have their budget version. Its not about having the best or latest technology. It's about having something really useful that benefits my life. For the price of 4 beers a month.

Still no good. It doesn't have a manual recharge winding handle.

Another triumph of design brought to you from the inventor of the electric beer platform. That would sell for quite a lot of money in London.
