I always understood that as referring to a ladygarden which has become naturally abundant. Yes, the Amazon rainforest. should that not be an amazon's rainforest ?

It's impressive how different the word amazon sounds if the emphasis is moved to the second syllable.
A bit of an American soundin word.
Sorry above is nonsense unless second a is pronounced as in "pay".

I once tried to explain the term 'Sweeney' to a Norwegian chap. It was surprisingly difficult. Random thought - one I didn't know until a while ago: 'Scarper' - Scapa Flow - Go. Or "Grumble", short for "Grumble and grunt"- a part of the female anatomy. Also Berk, Berkeley Hunt...
