The trouble with offence is that it contains and traps people. There need to be more gates to allow entry and exit.

Using the c word because you can, even when you know that other forum members find it offensive, is needless and IMO devalues you as a poster.
The Taliban think allowing girls to attend school is offensive. Should we go along with them just to avoid an argument and to avoid being devalued? Anyway I have avoided using that word since its offence-causing potential was pointed out to me, but that does make me feel a bit uncomfortable. Why do some people have the right to define words that we mustn’t use, whilst other don’t? I don’t think people are saying you mustn’t use this word, well I’m certainly not. Just prefer that you don’t.

So now the thread title has been changed, anyone reading this thread afresh now is going to be REALLY confused! On the other hand, the capitulation might mean that the actual topic can be discussed, rather than its title!

Coppers, some are good, some are bad. Just like doctors, nurses etc. Obvious exception being clowns.. they are all bad!

It's mostly the thing about coppers having the authority to detain people which is a concern.
Having said that anyone could fake a warrant card and one occasionally randomly finds them on the ground anyway. The vehicle was not a police car and presumably no blue lights on dash so all slightly odd.

What a load of absolute...cock ! I'm deeply offended. Please do not use such a coarse and derogatory term on my most favourite internet forum that absolutely anybody can participate in. 😟😏😆

But it must be a bit similar to believing the vicar is a nice guy right up until the moment he sticks his hand up your cassock. And there are lots of unmarked cars in service. A while back the met experimented with using quite old second-hand cars, presumably for budgetary reasons.

There was something all the way through this thread that was niggling and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. But now I remember. It reminds me of the time when middle-class church-going housewives would complain that homosexual people had stolen the word 'gay'.

I suppose the point is that the meaning of words can change with emphasis and time. I believe I already mentioned intent. It seems the term 'fag' no longer exclusively refers to a gay person but instead simply means 'annoying'. However this could be somewhat regional (and age-related), which perhaps might be defined as cultural.

It used to mean "cigarette" and visiting Yanks would be confused by the English term for "Can I scrounge a cigarette?" which was "Can I bum a fag?".

But surely "fag" is merely an abbreviation of "faggot"?

Obviously we’ve had this discussion on here before, but here goes again… No I really don’t understand what it is about that word that gets you upset. I’m 65 and until a few years ago I wasn’t aware that this was a particularly “bad” word (coincided with joining the Thunderboat!). After all, it is just a slang term for female genitalia. If you have ever used “cock”, “dickhead”, “bollocks” etc then it’s hard not to find your objection hypocritical. What is it about female genitalia that makes a slang reference to it so objectionable? Already said that I just don't like the word.To me-cock,willy,dick etc sound funny.Perhaps they don't to a bloke-fair enough. Lady garden, tuppence, china, halfpenny, down below seem to me to be more acceptable- so don't think I'm being hypocritical.I just don't like the word-END OF ! In the Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea under the entry "cunt splice" it says "the old name for what is now called a cut splice"
In a book I have, published just pre WWII, in the instructions for parcelling and serving it says "worm the cable in the cunting" which means laying cord or selvagee spirally along the grooves of the cable before serving
on other perfectly correct terms now considered "rude" the type of knife with two protuberances on the handle where it joins the blade is correctly termed a "bollock dagger"
