Indeed. Most often used on the canal by owners of ex-working boats to describe anything else. See also the term 'Noddy Boaters'. I recall a 'modern' narrowboat (might have been a Springer) which was painted sky-blue and was actually called 'Noddy Boat'. The name was in a whimsical font and adorned with toys and such. I'm sure the owner liked it.

I was acquainted with the owner of a Town-class butty whose sneer was especially practised when he used the term. Boy, he was a jerk.

I find it interesting up here that a large number of ex barge men seem to own boats ...... When I was in Goole for the first time I was walking past all the laid up working boats and noticed one that seemed to have a large wooden wheelhous amidships ...... I remarked to someone there my astonishment (I thought it had been bought out of trade and someone was converting it) He laughed and invited me onboard ...... the wheelhouse belonged to his 30 odd foot cruiser that was sitting happily in one of the holds while he worked on it !!! (the barge was about 140 footer )

That's the thing I always liked about trad motors - at least if they were unconverted. All that space to do stuff, as well as bags of room for, er, bags of coal and such. Plus I just like historic boats more than modern ones. Much better than a fitted space, perhaps more so in summer though.

We used the term “noddy boat(ers)” back in the 70s to describe cruisers, which of course were in the majority at the time for leisure use. We thought we were very traditional having a steel narrowboat, albeit a new one, with a lumpy lister aircooled,

Those with steel narrowboats still consider themselves a cut above plastic boats. Which, to be fair, I suppose they are (at least on the canal).

Noddyboaters, yoghurt pots, steel coffins etc I always think are the Brits way of giving a humorous name to stuff. I don't see any of that as derogatory.. I guess if u chose to take offence then that's up to the individuals perception of name calling. The names TD allocated to certain posters became badges to wear.. I don't see anything wrong with that... I just thought of it as typical Brit humour.

I suspect this is why in prison some prisoners get attacked. "I may not be perfect but I'm better than him" etc. Some people have made a living from going on about 'otherness'.

Noddyboaters, A funny thing about humans is that practically everybody thinks they are better and smarter. I'm glad you said "practically everybody" thinks this. I don't think it. I know it.

There r no smileys on these posts so do folk really think they are better and smarter than everyone else..? No wonder there r so many disagreements.. I knows what I know but I accept many folk know lots more than me, are better cooks than me, are smarter etc etc... But I'm happy with imperfections....

Taking offence and getting on high horses over inconsequential nothings appears to have become something of a national disease, . . generally prompted by preconceived personal bigotry rather anything that's actually been said or done.

'Taking offence and getting on high horses over inconsequential nothings' Like threats of a liable case for the 'three week' joke?
