I have had my plan for cruising this winter scuppered by long term winter stoppage near Gargrave, I am currently thinking about going on to the Ribble Link around Christmas, and pottering up and down the Lancaster. Is this a good plan?
I tried to phone the N W Offices for some related advice today, as advised by the CRT website.
Aparently the call centre don't release that number to the public (!!!!). Grrrrrr. Would I tell him what my query is, and what canal is the Ribble Link on. Now what advice can some person in a call centre give to myself, a stakeholder, the roles are reversed. It makes me so annoyed. As far as I can make out, as far as I am aware, The Ribble Link is the name of the navigation, but what is the point of the question, I wanted a phone number, he refused to give it me, end of query.

From what I've heard about the extent of Summer weed growth on the Lancaster Canal, I would say that using the canal in the depths of Winter, when most of the the weed will have died off, is a very good plan ! As for the C&RT nonsense about any part of the navigation between Tarleton and the Lancaster being 'closed' at ANY time -- that goes against the obligation that every navigation or harbour authority in control of tide gates or locks affording 'refuge from the tide' has to make passage through those gates or locks available AT ANY TIME that the state of the tide permits passage. Don't accept any of C&RT's crap about tide gates and locks being closed at any time when the state of the tide allows passage through them , . . it's up to you tell them when YOU want passage available through the tide lock at Tarleton and the tide gate in Savick Brook, . . and it's up to C&RT to make sure that it is.

The link is closed over winter as thebfg correctly pointed out. It is always closed over winter and is publicised as such. Rog Some C&RT office chair polisher saying that any tide lock or gate is closed to navigation other than over each low water period DOES NOT make it so -- as I've explained above. C&RT is progressively and stealthily closing down every canal and navigation that's been put under its control. Anyone entitled and wanting to use any of those waterways at any time of their choosing should not, MUST NOT, allow any incidence of this deliberate process of closure by stealth to go unopposed, . . however minor or insignificant it might seem at the time. There is absolutely no navigational, or operational, reason for passage to or from the Lancaster Canal or Preston Docks via the rivers Douglas and Ribble not to be open and available all year round.

Notwithstanding ... closed is what it is until spring.
You can try a 'Violet Elizabeth Bott' rant if you wish ... but it's still closed.

Notwithstanding ... closed is what it is until spring. You can try a 'Violet Elizabeth Bott' rant if you wish ... but it's still closed. Rog From the 1950's to the mid to late 1960's the British Waterways Board, and the Government that ultimately controlled it, openly sought to close down and formally abandon all but then still busy commercially used canals and river navigations. Thanks to the tireless efforts of those who actively opposed the BWB's plans back then, you, and a lot of people like you, now enjoy the benefit of having the existing canal system on which to indulge in your hobby. The C&RT have embarked on a similar program of closure, only this time it's more extensive -- the intention is to close down everything, including the remaining commercial waterways -- and it's being done gradually and stealthily, . . in a way that it's hoped won't be noticed or opposed until it's all too late to do anything about it. Are you content to be numbered amongst those standing back and allowing something that so many worked so long and so hard to see preserved, now being progressively and surreptitiously destroyed ?

And will reopen the beginning of April.
They aren't likely going to permently close a section that was only built in 2002.
