Been doing a job on a large barge about to go back in service after being laid up for several years.
The electrics always seem to be a problem after not being used for some time, damp, cold and often not particularly well installed in the first place.
This was the rudder position indicator, quite importsnt with a very large boat and no way of seeing where the rudder is pointing.
No lights on, fuse intact, supply ..... sort of ok but cable joints oxidised a bit.
Unit installed in a very heavy gauge brass casting but examining it only 2 of the 6 screws holding the lid on were actually doing anything and half the gasket missing .... Hmmmmmm !!!
the dial didn't actually fit the hole cut out for it and had a 1/8th inch gap at the top ....... Hmmmmmm !!!
removed the Unit carefully numbering the cables and the terminals they came off .
No way was I going to attempt to take apart an obviously expensive unit on site ....... so back to Sabina to work on it in comfort.
As per normal, tiny screws so out with the fine tools and carefully removed the cover
Oh dear !!! that does not look like good news !!!
There are limits to what I will take on, that would have to be totally un-replaceable before I would even make a first attempt ........ new unit needed (about Ā£300)
only when I instal it I will try and make the housing it goes in properly watertight this time !!!
