Hi all - I am unfortunately trying to sell my boat and have a *potential* buyer who would want to take the boat up the Regents canal from Limehouse to Islington - through Sturts lock. The boat is a luxemotor - 25.04m x 4.2m - air draft tbc but about 8 ft with wheel house down. I know this would not get through the entire Regents canal and I believe the lock at Kings Cross would be too small - but I am trying to find lock / air draft dimensions between Limehouse and Sturts lock. Does anyone know? There is a 27m lighter up there - which at least *suggests* I might get through, but I am hoping to track down a bit more information before I cycle the route with a tape measure! Thanks all Richard ps. If anyone is interested in buying a barge! www.apolloduck.co.uk/boat.phtml?id=628068

Can’t answer your question I’m afraid, but the link doesn’t work for me.

I sent you a response to your pm.
If it were me I would take the boat into commercial road lock out of Limehouse and see if it fits under the road bridge which is immediately above the lock.
That bridge is one of the old Regents / GU profile types and would be a useful indicator to see if the boat would go further.
Most of the old bridges are quite a similar profile although at Dalston there are a couple of low ones.
If it doesn't fit under the commercial road bridge above the lock then it's an easy job to reverse back and swing for the marina. If it does then how are your adventuring skills?
And does it have a bow truster?

Many thanks for that.. a I think I need to take a more precise measurement of height, make up a line the same length of the boat and get over on my bike to do a few measurements on the route itself. No bow thruster and 'interesting' in reverse so it would certainly be an adventure to get stuck!

I think you might have got that wrong as 27m is 88 feet and there is no way any of the regents canal locks are close to that size. I initially read your boat length as 23m but I see it is 25m. The old Regents canal barges were around 78ft which is just under 24m. Your boat won't fit into commercial road lock let alone go under the bridge It's too long. There are a few barges up in Islington which are large but they are regents canal barges/lighters and won't be longer than 24m. Who told you about a 27m one or was it that scrap one on apolloduck?

This one says 5m wide and 27m long. www.apolloduck.co.uk/boat/barges-thames-for-sale/678330However that is impossible unless it was craned in on site. I've seen it and pretty sure it's an old Regents canal barge which is basically about 78ft x 14ft which would be 24m X 4.2m. The locks getting there are wide locks but not a lot wider than two narrow boats. Maybe you could get 14ft6 but never 16ft. Duff info unless they had a mammoth crane. Perhaps they did crane it in and thus have a significant problem disposing of it ! It didn't look wider than the other ones around there last time I passed. I'm intrigued now. Maybe it's me with the duff information ?

CRT up to their usual tricks but the 8ft10 headroom is interesting. I wonder if that was measured from a narrow boat

I think I have a contact for the person who owns the lighter and will see if I can confirm the measurement. Sounds like I won't get into commercial road lock - but I might take a tape measure along and check. Likely just a meter too long and not enough room to go diagonal. Will let you know what I find out. R
