been looking for a couple of photos I had from a tug trip to Barnstable can't find them without a mahor search .... we had a collection much like that round the prop, fortunately you dry out alongside the quay there and we were able to cut it off without needing drydock or divers (I say "we" but I wasn't going to get involved with that job .... no way )

Bideford on the other hand gets some traffic. Oldenburg and the gravel boat being regularly in there.

Laid on quayside just at the end of the High street opposite the pub
(possibly the proximity to the pub is why I have hazy memories )

Still can't decide what boat to get for down here, the estuary is like the East coast* but with huge tides. * Very muddy

We had engine trouble off Hartland point in pretty rough weather and although we were only stopped for abut 30 or 40 minutes total, we obviously advised the coastguard of our position.
When we were underway again we told the coastguard and they informed us that the Appledore Lifeboat was on it's way to us.
Apparently they decided if we had needed assistance they needed to get over the bar then and there otherwise it wouldn't have been possible.
If they didn't launch and we had needed assistance then we would have been depending on a Lifeboat from the Welsh coast
We met them and both we and the lifeboat went to Lundy and anchored in the lee until the next morning.
By then the weather had eased a lot so we headed in.
They went ahead of us over the bar to check it and then came back out and escorted us in.
As you say that bar is a serious business in any sort of a blow (and that was a very nasty bit of bad weather even for a 150 ton ocean going tug)
The only pictures I have of that trip to hand is these pictures of the Appledore lifeboat escorting us over the bar
