6mm stainless is quite strong but I'd use more pins. Perhaps 5. This is a fallacy. The load-bearing capability of the fixing is determined by the weakest element thus having more doesn't increase strength. Are you sure about that? In the case of a wooden beam the load is spread out rather than being at a single point.

Thanks for the replies I'll definitely make a template before any drilling, I hadn't thought of that. I think I'll go for 2 x 8mm rods then use Gripfill on the rear edge where it butts up to the wall, for added security.

I don't reckon it applies with rods holding a sea beam onto a wall.
Are you saying that it would be equally secure with one pin as it would with 25 pins?

But I think I have now.....

But the conception is to do it using hidden fixings (as opposed to just bolting through) which presents a few minor difficulties. The game is to get it on straight or it will look a bit crap. Don't lose any sleep.

Why not just dry it out and burn it?

Why not just dry it out and burn it? That is what will happen if he gets it wrong...

Surely it would also be worth having a couple of uprights to hold it. Broom handles or 22/28mm copper tube.
Then the pins would be less important. Or a couple of very small safety chains.
Toilet flushing chain is quite aesthetically pleasing.

My aim is to totally rebuild the bench bit by bit

Maybe I'll post a pic, well after the next 'have a go phase' Its not quite right yet (cannot see the kids fighting over this when I RIP)
