Jane visited London for the day yesterday ... Doncaster to Kings Cross in 1 hour 30 mins ... plenty fast enough I would have thought.
Yet billions have been spent on the vanity project which is HS2, one branch having been abandoned already despite billions spent.
Billions spent on the covid pandemic in all its guises ... PPE, LFT, contracts to cronies etc.
Yet ask about homelessness, the poor state of our education system, the collapse of the NHS, relative child poverty, rising fuel costs and a myriad of other issues that could be addressed were there a political will, and the answer is "but we can't afford it".
Boris stays or goes ... does anyone think either way it will make any difference ?

Exactly real change will only happen when we have people oriented policies in place rather than purely profit oriented ones. Who ever it is who implements them.

If Boris stays - we willget a Labour party in power at the next GE.
If Boris goes - we will probably be stuck with same old same old politics for many years.

Dont worry Corbyn and momentum have not gone away, labour will rip themselves to pieces at the next GE giving the tories a bigger majority

Boris stays or goes ... does anyone think either way it will make any difference ? Rog Rog, I think several of us have pointed out that much razzamatazz has been pumped out about HS2 being for higher speed passenger trains, (mostly by people who oppose it) but that is irrelevant to the need for it.
The present North South railway system is the product of the 21st century and there is no longer sufficient capacity for freight traffic due to the large amount of passenger traffic.
If there is a genuine requirement to move traffic off the road and onto rail then you need a new line.
If you are going to build one then you might as well build it so the latest generation (and possible future generations) of rail can utilise it.
Freight, because of the lower present speed requirements would find the present route well able to cope with it's further expansion and without the passenger traffic which presently clogs it up, will be much more efficient.
(and if someone says "why don't you upgrade the present route" You can't.
The route/stations/tunnels/bridges were built for a certain amount of traffic, with curves and gradients for the requirements of those times.
To upgrade that, would have involved vast amounts of turmoil for both passenger and freight.
Many areas especially in towns and cities houses and businesses are very close to the existing track and would mean compulsory purchase of huge numbers of homes and factories.
It is only possible to upgrade to a certain amount after that you need to build new

The point is that Conservative spending priorities are not mine.
Secondly money is always found for THEIR priorities ... so "we can't afford it" doesn't wash.

HS2 is not a Conservative party project
I suggest you have a very short memory
The first High speed line was the Chunnel link .... HS1
HS2 after consultation between British Rail, Dept for Transport and HS2 limited was presented to parliament was proposed by HM government in 2009
I suggest you are forgetting what political party was in power while all the design and planning was going on and what political party was in power when it was announced.
In case you have forgotten the government that followed that was a Liberal/Tory coalition which after some minor changes, rubber stamped it.
This is not a one party idea of a "vanity" project, it somethinhg that politicians of at least 3 parties have agreed is needed
It is such a rare thing, I am astonished you can have forgotten it.

HS2 is a transport system designed for those who can afford it (and have a use for it) which isn't you or I. It will promote business which will have no direct or indirect value for the many. It doesn't matter who was, is or will be in power. It is a crime that the route called for the destruction of so many quite ancient natural habitats which was an act of government-sponsored vandalism.
I've been looking for a picture of the Roman road laid straight through a pagan burial site in Hertfordshire but I couldn't find one so you'll just have to imagine it.

The tories have been in power a long time though, thus giving plenty of opportunity to drop the project, which of course they’ve chosen not to do. So you’re both correct to a certain extent.

Examples where “you and me” is the object of the verb: He saw you and me in the street. The host introduced you and me to his wife. The boss gave you and me our assignments. We are not doing the seeing, the introducing or the giving — we are the recipients of those actions.
