Finally I have decided to try out doing an ebike. I wanted something small and easy to take on trains so have opted for an Ammaco Zigzag. A hand made bike apparently which is rather pleasant. Actually quite a nice little bike found one for Β£30+Β£10 petrol to get there and back. It's not a folder but handlebars and seat go down and pedals fold in. I reckon with a 1kw 48v wheel motor on one end and battery somewhere it could be quite good. I imagine that 25mph on it may be rather hair raising and could lead to a reduced life expectancy but that's not a major concern. It's an interesting bike collecting it on Thursday. Fun time ? Or hospital time ? I think the motor goes on the front firstly because of the drum brake and secondly because that frame geometry looks like mad wheelies might happen.

There is something nicely geometric about it.

I like it from an engineering perspective. Triangulation is a basic principle of strong structures. I suppose some people might think electricity pylons are ugly but To my eye they are beautiful and functional items.
It will be interesting to see how flexible the bike is. I had a Bickerton years ago and that really was a flexible bike. The whole thing was alive.

It will be more than a bit lively at warp speed on that! 20β wheels on my folder is sketchy at well <20 mph Stability starts at 24β Donβt be tempted for big numbers - go for usability else you end up mowing someone down and doing yourself a mischief like that twat on the fixie in east Londinium

Yes it is 16 inch wheels. Maybe go for the 500w motor then.

I had a chinese special for a while which only had a 250watt motor and it was absolute shite. You had to assist up the slightest incline, and if the power ran out it was inpossible to pedal as the cranks were way too short. I have a folder that is the same make as yours and it is well engineered and stable to ride.

A legal bafang bbs01b mid motor would get that going at 25mph easy, just play with the settings. Would also keep some weight forwards. A front hub will scutter and slip, given your weight is so far back. I'd mount a battery on the headstock tube, again shifting weight forwards. Exhaust pipe u clamps might work. There would certainly be plenty of torque for acceleration with a small wheel.
I had a bickerton bendybike too, an acquired taste, great fun.

I was thinking of sticking the battery on with this new glue product I found. It comes in little foil covered paper envelopes and it's known as "ebike gum". Made in Yorkshire.
A mid drive is certainly an appealing option thanks for the suggestion.

Hells teeth the price !
To be honest I had been also thinking of using a 6374 RC plane motor using the can as a friction drive. I did this with a BMX in a half hearted way without decent batteries a while ago and got good results actually.
Somewhere in the bowels of the boat there are one or two of these insanely powerful and insanely small motors.
Might be worth a play. Nice and light and easy to take off it its no good.

We need a photo of you on it for perspective. I imagine you kind of darwf it. I still keep think of electrifying my post office bike. A mid mounted motor is the way. Iβm waiting to find a good deal on one.

I did a bit of research and someone who was obviously a bike enthusiast/collector was selling one and they said it was suitable for inside leg up to 33.5 inch so I think it might be okay. Have to be careful about the seat post not being too far out. I know someone who had a seatpost failure on a normal bike at quite high speed and he ended up with titanium pins in his leg after the fall broke it in several places.
Not ideal !
