Grease for ebike motors is also expensive, but following recommendations on pedelecs forum I got an out of date 3kg tub of aeroshell 22 for £26. It will last me out. it's helicopter grease, but suitable for nylon gears etc.

So on the subject of greasy cocks - here is a gratuitous photo! JohnV will probably recognise it. Not sure why it is sideways but hey ho! It is the original engine cooling seacock that fed the Stuart turner P55m that was in Northern Star, it now does duty as the toilet flush water. Getting stiff and generally a bit crusty meant it was time for a grind in, grease up and replace the two rings of gland packing - an odd idea seeing as they can be glandless on account of the taper, no locking nuts available meant it stays as it was!
