Has anyone any recommendations for an oil suction device for sucking old oil up thro the dipstick for changing? Prefer something easy store etc as it'll be used pretty infrequently!

It's only for doing my genny ( 3cyl Kubota) once a year...is it worth the extra £20 odd quid on the Pela?
Is it easier using one of these than draining my boat motor into a pan via the sump plug?
Do they clear virtually all the oil and is it best being done warm?

I'm surprised nobody has made an electronic sump pump yet.

I'm surprised nobody has made an electronic sump pump yet. I presume you mean electric? If so then yes, they're available. They're ever so slow though.

Ever so slow? That qualifies as the understatement of the year! The one I (unwisely) bought also blocked very easily. It's currently sitting in the garage, having pumped a total of about 2 litres of engine oil. The engine was hot when I started, but cold when I gave up and just dumped the rest of the oil into the drip tray. The cleanup operation was quicker than waiting for the pump.

I must be doing something wrong with my Pela pump then. I have the globe shaped one rather than the tall cylindrical one. I constantly have to pump it every ten seconds and i only get a tiny bit of oil each time. I've tried pumping it a few times and then just being patient, but the oil stops flowing after about 10 seconds. Yes the oil was hot.
So I've given up with the Pela pump and returned to using the hand pump on the side of the engine which takes 60 mins of constant pumping to get 10litres out.
Needless to say i am overdue an oil change.

Possibly other engines with a fixed pump are the same. 2) Air has to be able to get into the engine, I remove the oil filler cap - I know this as I didn't the first time and it does slow things up a lot.

On mine the bit that goes down the dipstick hole is nothing more than a motor cycle control cable outer. This has a very thin plastic covering. If this covering gets punctured it will suck air rather than oil giving those symptoms. Vehicle Wiring Products list the outers by the metre.
